149th Running of the Preakness Stakes Today

The 149th Preakness Stakes takes place today at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The Preakness Stakes will start at 7:01 p.m. Mystik Dan, the favorite to win today’s race, is the winner of the Kentucky Derby. A win in the Preakness Stakes by Mystik Dan would put a potential Triple Crown in play.

The Triple Crown – Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes – has only been accomplished 13 times in the history of horse racing. The last Triple Crown winner was Justify in 2018. Justify just narrowly beat Bravazo in the 2018 Preakness Stakes.

149th Running of the Preakness Stakes Today
A win by Mystik Dan in the Preakness Stakes would give the horse a shot at a Triple Crown.

The Preakness Stakes is always the second leg of the Triple Crown. It is the shortest of the Triple Crown races. The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico is 1 3/16 miles – 9 furlongs – long. The race typically favors those horses with great speed rather than stamina. In addition to Mystik Dan, Imagination is among the top favorites at 3-1 odds.

The original 2024 Preakness Stakes favorite was Muth, but the horse was scratched earlier in the week due to sickness. That will take this year’s Preakness Stakes field down to just eight horses. Only three – Mystik Dan, Catching Freedom, and Just Steel – ran in the 2024 Kentucky Derby. Read more about the 2024 Preakness Stakes HERE.
