D-backs Turn to Ace Zac Gallen in Opener vs. Improving Marlins
Momentum from a Major Win
The Arizona Diamondbacks are currently in a good period following their first road series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers in six years. They are excited to uphold the positive atmosphere as they kick off a three-game home series against the improving Miami Marlins on Friday night in Phoenix.
The Diamondbacks clinched the series by defeating the NL West- leading Dodgers 6-0 in the last game, bringing their record to 24-26.
First baseman Christian Walker, who hit a home run in the last two games, commented that these series victories can definitely provide some momentum. Manager Torey Lovullo said, “We have been anticipating something like this.” We have been performing at a higher level in baseball for the last two to three weeks. We must keep moving forward, but I believe this will motivate us.
Pitching Matchup
Arizona plans to start their top pitcher Zac Gallen (5-3, 3.02 ERA) in the game. Gallen has been exceptional facing his old team, showcasing a 1.35 ERA in three previous starts and maintaining a flawless 3-0 record against the Marlins. Challenging him will be Miami southpaw Braxton Garrett (0-0, 10.24 ERA), who has yet to secure a victory this season.
Diamondbacks’ Optimism
There are plenty of reasons for the Diamondbacks to feel positive. Second baseman Ketel Marte has extended his hitting streak to 21 games, tying for the fourth-longest in franchise history. In their latest game, Corbin Carroll added a two-run triple, Walker continued his home run streak, and Ryne Nelson delivered five innings of shutout relief.
“We did a lot right,” Lovullo said. “We executed. We were focused. And that’s why we won games.”
Marlins’ Recent Success
The Marlins had a rough start to the season, going 6-24, but have improved by winning 7 of their last 10 games and three series against the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, and Milwaukee Brewers. Their most recent achievement was a 1-0 win against the Brewers on Wednesday, featuring Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s leadoff home run and Jesus Luzardo’s dominant eight innings.
“We all knew we were going to get into it eventually,” Chisholm said. “We started the same way we started last year after the All-Star break. So we’re not surprised right now that we’re winning. We just know that we’re a good team.”
Series Outlook
Although they started poorly, the Marlins are confident they can come together and aim for the playoffs, which adds more excitement to the series as both teams strive to continue their recent progress. Gallen has had great success against Miami and the Diamondbacks are on a roll, making this series opener an exciting game to watch.
