2024 Tour De France White Jersey Odds and Predictions 

The 2024 Tour de France gets underway on Saturday, June 29, from Florence, Italy. It’s the first time that the Grande Depart starts in Italy. This year will also be the first year that the Tour doesn’t end in or near Paris and it’s the first time someone else has a shot at winning the White Jersey competition since 2019. 

For the last four years, Tadej Pogacar has dominated this secondary competition of the Tour de France. However, he’s no longer eligible, which means we’ll have an exciting battle for the White Jersey this year.  

Let’s examine the latest cycling odds, discuss how to bet on the Tour de France, and make our 2024 Tour de France White Jersey predictions.  

What is the white jersey in the 2024 Tour de France? 

The Tour de France has four main jersey competitions. Most people are familiar with the Yellow Jersey, which is for the overall race winner. However, there’s also the Green Jersey for the points competition, the Polka Dot Jersey for the King of the Mountains competition and the White Jersey.  

The White Jersey represents the best Young Rider Classification. It’s a secondary competition that began in 1975, but was excluded from 1989 to 1999, before making it’s way back. For the last 25 years, this jersey has mostly been worn by some of the sport’s brightest stars.  

To qualify for this competition, a cyclist has to be under the age of 26 during the year of this race. So, Tadej Pogacar turns 26 in September, and is therefore ineligible for this jersey competition in the 2024 Tour de France.  

With that said, Pogacar holds the record for the most White Jersey wins with four (2020-2023) and the most days in the White Jersey at 75.  

The winner of the best Young Rider Classification must meet the age requirements and finish with the fastest overall time at the end of the Tour de France.

Tadej Pogacar finished almost six minutes ahead of the second place Carlos Rodriguez in the 2023 White Jersey competition. Felix Gall was the only other rider within 10 minutes of the four-time winner Pogacar.  

Tour de France White Jersey Favorites 

The following cyclists are considered the odds-on favorites to win the White Jersey competition: 

Carlos Rodriguez +140  

The Spanish cyclist is 23-years-old and could be the best Young Rider of the Tour de France for the next three years if INEOS Grenadiers sticks with him as their leader. If you watched the second season of Tour de France Unchained on Netflix, then you understand what I mean by the way INEO fumbled the team captain last year during the Tour.  

Eventually, Rodriguez would earn it on the roads but it wasn’t without controversy as Tom Pidcock had his own ambitions. However, as you can see above, Rodriguez ended up second in the White Jersey competition last year, while Pidcock ended up 4^th. Pidcock was over 30 minutes behind Rodriguez, who also finished 5^th in the GC Standings and Pidcock finished 13^th.  

This year, INEOS sends a stacked squad that includes former Tour winners in Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas, along with Tom Pidcock. Fortunately for Rodriguez, INEOS performance director Scott Drawer has publicly announced that Spanish cyclist will be the leader of the squad heading into the Tour: 

This is big news for Rodriguez, the team, and anyone looking to bet on the Spaniard for the White, Yellow or Polka Dot jersey competitions.  

So far in 2024, Rodriguez has three victories. He picked up a stage win in the Itzulia Basque Country race and another in the Criterium du Dauphine. He also won the Tour de Romandie’s five-stage race in April. However, a fourth-place result at Dauphine did have some questioning his potential heading into the Tour.  

Juan Ayuso +250 

Another Spaniard near the top of the White Jersey betting odds is Juan Ayuso for UAE Team Emirates, which is my pick for the best squad in the Tour de France.  

Although Ayuso will be riding for Tadej Pogacar’s quest of a third Tour de France victory, the 21-year-old has quietly had a solid season so far and brings firepower to UAE in his Tour debut.  

After a few smaller races, Ayuso had a strong performance in the Tirreno-Adriatico in March. He finished second to Jonas Vingegaard at 84 seconds behind. He also snagged a stage win in this race and the Youth Classification.  

Ayuso followed up that performance with a victory at the Itzulia Basque Country race in June after many top stars crashed out. He was 5^th at the Tour de Romandie and abandoned the Criterium du Dauphine on Stage 6 in early June.  

With that said, Ayuso will be a strong domestique for Pogacar and consistently by his side in the mountains. This could result in strong finishes on the Tour’s toughest stages.  

Remco Evenepoel+350  

Like Ayuso, this will be Remco Evenepoel’s Tour de France debut. However, the Belgian rider already has a Grand Tour victory on his resume as he won the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. With that said, Evenepoel made some comments that concern me for his upcoming Tour de France appearance: 

Evenepoel is considered one of the Big 4 for this race, which includes Pogacar, Vingegaard, and Primoz Roglic. These four riders are tabbed as the top GC contenders to win the 2024 Tour de France.  

Evenepoel is the leader of Soudal Quick-Step and they have put some talent around him including Mikal Landa. On the year, Remco has five wins.  However, he suffered a crash in the Itzulia Basque Country that led to a subpar form in the Criterium du Dauphine.  

I expect the 24-year-old to be in top form for the Tour de France, but I am concerned about his comments above. This doesn’t sound like a rider with the confidence of competing for the Yellow Jersey. It doesn’t even sound like a rider with the confidence to compete for the White Jersey.  

Tom Pidcock+600 

The British cyclist didn’t fare well in the Tour de France last year. He ended up 13^th overall after aspirations of finishing on the podium. Pidcock cracked in the mountains, which allowed Rodriguez to swoop in and take the INEOS leadership position. However, despite his disappointing result, it was still three spots better than his 2022 finish of 16^th overall. 

On the season, Pidcock has performed well both in road races and mountain biking. In fact, he just dominated the Swiss MTB, took home some gold, and picked up his second mountain bike win of the year.  

In road course racing, Pidcock’s highlights include 4^th at Strade Bianche, 9^th at Tirreno-Adriatico, first in the Amstel Gold Race, and 6^th at the Tour de Suisse.  

Although Pidcock has been given +600 odds to win the White Jersey, he’s well behind the other three favorites. INEOS will not tolerate his solo-ambitions this year, especially with veterans like Thomas on the team.  

I expect Pidcock to compete for stage wins and ride in support of Rodriguez. But don’t waste your money on the Brit for this competition. There’s better value on the board.  

Best Tour de France White Jersey Betting Value 

Speaking of better value, Matteo Jorgenson (+1400) offers the best value for this competition. In fact, I have him as my top longshot for winning the Tour de France. The almost 25-yeard-old American will have just one crack at the White Jersey competition as he will age out next year. With that said, I expect Jorgenson to put up a strong showing.  

The American rider has had a surprising 2024 season to date. In fact, his performance so far, has some pundits proclaiming that he could be the next great GC rider for Visma-Lease a Bike. It wouldn’t be surprising since this team continues to roll out GC contenders like Roglic, Vingegaard, and Sepp Kuss.  

On the year, Jorgenson has already won the Dwars door Vlaanderen and Paris-Nice races this year. He also finished second behind Roglic in the Criterium du Dauphine, but came away with two runner-up results on stages, a runner-up for the Green Jersey and a victory in the White Jersey competition.  

Jorgenson will ride in support of Vingegaard but let’s not forget that Jonas is coming into this year’s Tour less than 100%. He suffered a punctured lung in a crash this spring and is not favored to win the Tour for a third straight year. If Vingegaard struggles at all, I believe Jorgenson would get tabbed as the leader over Kuss just because Jorgenson is the better time trialist.  

The Top Tour de France White Jersey Longshot 

Lenny Martinez (+5000) was surprisingly added to the Groupama-FDJ squad for this year’s Tour. Martinez was originally tabbed to race the 2024 Vuelta a Espana. Additionally, the 20-year-old cyclist has been rumored to be leaving this team for Bahrain-Victorious this year.  

With the shock out of the way, I actually like Martinez to compete for the best Young Rider classification. On the year, Martinez has already won five smaller races. He also was 8^th at the Tour de Romandie and 7^th in the Volta a Catalunya. Martinez impressed pundits earlier this year with a second-place result at the O Gran Camino, finishing behind Vingegaard.  

Groupama-FDJ won’t have a true GC contender this year especially with David Gaudu struggling. So, this squad should be free to go after stages and individual glory. Martinez is a solid climber, which bodes well for his standing in this classification. At +5000 odds on Bovada, the French climber is worth a small flier.  

Tour de France White Jersey Head To Head Matchups 

The following Tour de France prop bets are courtesy of Bet365 and they require you to pick which cyclist will finish higher in the White Jersey standings at the end of the race:  

Matteo Jorgenson (-138) vs. Santiago Buitrago (+100) 

Buitrago has had a modest performance this season so far, with just one victory that came on Stage 4 of Paris Nice. The 24-year-old will make his Tour de France debut, but has competed in five Grand Tours already. His best performance came in the 2023 Vuelta where he finished 10^th.  

With that said, Buitrago is going to be the leader of Bahrain-Victorious. Additionally, he’s already focused on the White Jersey competition: 

With that in mind, I like Buitrago’s chances against Jorgenson. If Matteo continues to ride in support of Vingegaard then Buitrago should win this head-to-head matchup. As much as I feel that Jorgenson could be a GC star, Buitrago will actually be the team leader and GC contender with a full squad supporting him. Take the Colombian rider to win this prop bet. You can also add him to as a flier to win the White Jersey competition at +2000 odds. 

TDF Bet: Santiago Buitrago (+100) 

Juan Ayuso (-200) vs. Tom Pidcock (+150) 

This is going to be a fun head-to-head matchup. Both men have won races this season and are riding as top supporters for their GC leaders: Ayuso for Pogacar and Pidcock for Rodriguez.  

Although I think Pidcock will have some freedom to go for stage wins, I actually like Ayuso’s chances of finishing higher in the standings due to his form this year and legs in the mountains. I think he will finish higher in the GC and White Jersey standings than Pidcock. I expect the Brit to crack in the high mountains once again.

Tour de France White Jersey Predictions  

I have gone back and forth between Evenepoel and Rodriguez as they both are highly talented, young riders. With that said, I am taking Rodriguez to win the White Jersey competition.  

Rodriguez has a better supporting cast than Evenepoel. And, though Remco is the better time trialist, I believe we will see Evenepoel crack in the mountains during the third week, which will allow Rodriguez to pull away in the standings for the GC and the Young Rider classifications.  

I’m high on Rodriguez as a GC rider and a potential threat to land on the podium. He’ll have to outduel Roglic and Evenepoel to get there, but he’s shown the form and the mental toughness to compete in the world’s biggest cycling race.
