The Mets stopped the Astros’ seven-game winning streak with a 7-2 victory on Friday night. They were attempting to reach a winning percentage above .500 for the first time in the current year. Even with the defeat, the Astros have shown impressive skill in June, holding onto the best record in the American League with 15 wins and 8 losses.
Houston has reached the American League Championship Series for seven years in a row, but this season has posed challenges. They found themselves twelve games below a .500 record on two separate occasions this season. During their most recent winning streak, the team has been scoring an average of 6.9 runs per game. However, they faced challenges with runners in scoring position in Friday’s game, leading to a season-high of 14 runners being stranded despite achieving 12 hits.
“The baseball we’ve been playing has been outstanding,” declared Astros manager Joe Espada. “And this evening was not one of those enjoyable nights.”
Ronel Blanco, ranked fifth in the AL with a 2.34 ERA on Friday, allowed six runs in 5 2/3 innings, but only three were earned because of an error by Alex Bregman in the sixth inning.
New York Mets
The Mets (40-39) went above a .500 winning percentage after nearly two months with their win on Friday evening. The Mets, leading MLB this month with a 16-6 record, received home runs from Tyrone Taylor, Pete Alonso, and Jeff McNeil.
New York have made a strong comeback from being 11 games below .500, most notably on June 2. In 14 out of their last 26 games, they have scored a minimum of five runs, which has helped them make a comeback.
Starter Jose Quintana lasted just one batter into the fifth inning on Friday, but the bullpen combination of Adam Ottavino, Dedniel Nunez, Jake Diekman, and Reed Garrett blanked the Astros the rest of the way.
“We’re just playing good baseball right now,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Knowing we’ve got a ways to go, but I like our approaches (and) the way we’re going about our business.”
