Volleyball figures to be one of the more interesting events for Summer Olympics betting this year. There are no clear-cut favorites to claim gold on either the men’s or women’s side, and you’re getting value no matter which way you go.
I already broke down the men’s Olympic volleyball odds, and now it’s time to see how the women’s side will shake out.
Italy enters Paris as the tentative favorites, but the pricing suggests nobody knows for sure if they’re up to the task. The Americans have solid odds and won in Tokyo four years ago, so it’ll be tough to write them off, as well.
Wondering how to bet on this 2024 Olympics betting market? Let’s explore the latest women’s Olympic volleyball odds to gauge how to proceed.
2024 Women’s Olympic Volleyball Odds
Odds to Win Gold in Women’s Olympic Volleyball | |
---|---|
Italy +300 | Turkey +450 |
Brazil +500 | United States +550 |
Serbia +650 | China +800 |
Poland +900 | Japan +1200 |
Netherlands +5000 | Dominican Republic +10000 |
France +25000 | Kenya +100000 |
Italy owns the best odds of winning the gold medal in women’s volleyball this year, even though they haven’t ever even placed at the Olympics in this event.
Team USA ranks fourth in terms of odds despite winning four years ago, while China has reasonable odds to tie the Soviet Union for most women’s volleyball gold medals.
Let’s see how all these teams stack up against each other with the latest women’s volleyball gold medal odds over at BetOnline.
Italy is a favorite in name, but their history isn’t very appealing. Literally never winning an Olympic medal of any kind has to feel pretty damning if you were planning on backing them.
It’s certainly nice to get the defending gold medalists at a discount, as the Americans look pretty good at their +550 price tag at online sports betting sites.
In all, a whopping seven countries have +900 odds to win gold in women’s volleyball, which suggests this is truly anyone’s game. But why is Italy favored, why are the Americans not, and what other women’s Olympic volleyball squads could rise up and win this thing?
I’ll answer all of that, starting with a close inspection of what makes Italy a compelling – or not so compelling – betting favorite.
Why is Italy Favored to Win Gold in Paris?
Italy isn’t the favorite due to their past dominance in women’s volleyball at the Olympics, that’s for sure. However, they have certainly made a name for themselves lately.
For what it’s worth, they did make it to the Quarterfinals in Tokyo and ended up finishing a respectable sixth. And in their last five trips to the Summer Games, they made it to the QF four times.
Of course, it’s what they’ve done since Tokyo that has them on the map. They’ve been racking up hardware, with a bronze win at the World Championship in 2022, gold at the 2021 European Championship, and first place finishes in the Nations League in 2022 and 2024.
Italy wasn’t the most impressive team during the 2024 Nations League tournament – at least not at first. Still, they went 10-2 with the second most points (31) and the second best setpoint ratio in the preliminary round.
Once in the Quarterfinals, they blanked the US (3-0), took out Poland (3-0), and ousted Japan (3-1) for first place.
Could that dominant run be a sign of things to come? It certainly doesn’t guarantee anything, but Italy’s form and fantastic play in a tough tourney make them a viable favorite.
Top 2024 Women’s Olympic Volleyball Contenders
The case against Italy is obviously their lack of actual production in the Summer Games. Until they break through and prove everyone wrong, you’re going to want to consider betting on some alternatives.
Their +300 price is good for a favorite, but all things considered, it doesn’t blow you away. Due to that, I’d be giving the following three women’s Olympic volleyball contenders a long, hard look.
Turkey +450
I’m not super excited to back Turkey, either, if I am being honest. They also have yet to win even a single medal of any kind in this event, and they lack meaningful wins.
The cupboard isn’t totally bare, of course, as they did win silver at the 2022 Mediterranean Games, while they also took home the top spot in the 2023 European Championship and the 2023 Nations League.
They weren’t nearly as good in the 2024 Nations League (bowing out in the QF), but they’ve done enough lately to remain on bettor’s radar. I still view them as a contender to win a medal in this event, and I can’t rule out a rally to claim gold, either.
However, I’d have flipped the odds around a bit. Turkey has the second best women’s volleyball odds going into Paris, and that isn’t at all where I’d have placed them.
Brazil +500
This is the team that should have the second best odds, and it’s arguable Brazil deserves to be the betting favorite. They didn’t win at the 2024 Nations League, but they absolutely dominated out of the gates.
Brazil went undefeated in the preliminary round (12-0), piling up the most points, the most sets won, the best set ratio, and the most setpoints won. They even had the second best setpoint ratio to get the tourney started.
The problem? They eventually ran out of gas.
Brazil did easily dispatch Thailand in the Quarterfinals, but ran into a determined Japan squad that beat them in a grueling 3-2 Semifinals showdown.
That doesn’t mean Brazil isn’t a fearsome foe, though. They obviously were doing as they pleased for the majority of that tournament, while that’s been the case for them frequently in the Olympics, too.
Brazil has been a mainstay in the Summer Games, winning gold back-to-back in 2008 and 2021, and even finishing second with the silver medal in Tokyo. They’ve won five medals in this event since 1996, and have at least been within striking distance to place every time since 1992.
I’d expect that to be the case again at the 2024 Paris Games, making Brazil a pretty attractive +500 gold medal contender.
United States +550
Let’s not forget about the team that most recently claimed gold. That’s none other than Team USA, who went 7-1 en route to their first ever women’s volleyball gold medal.
The United States dominated their pool group with a 4-1 record and once the knockouts began, they never looked back. They were honestly never challenged, either, as they won 3-0 in every single showdown on their way to the podium.
The only issue with getting too excited about Team USA is that this was the first time they got it done at this level. Of course, they were far from newbies, as they had won a bronze and two silver medals across their previous three Olympics runs.
Overall, I love the USA’s experience and grit. It’s a little crazy that they’ve had so much success – let alone are the defending world champions – and still come in with the fourth best women’s Olympic volleyball odds.
Best 2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Volleyball Value Bet
There are some intriguing women’s volleyball sleepers, to be sure. France is playing in front of their home crowd, so that alone makes them a somewhat appealing +25000 value bet.
Kenya isn’t a serious contender to win gold in women’s volleyball, but their +100000 odds are also to die for.
The one team that really does stand out as a tremendous value has to be Japan. They were once a team to seriously be feared in this competition, having claimed two gold medals and six in all.
The days of Japan ruling women’s volleyball are admittedly long gone, but they’ve shown growth over the past four years. That includes a silver medal at the 2024 Nations League, as a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games.
Japan isn’t a serious threat to go the distance in Paris, but they have a better shot than France or Kenya. At +1200, I wouldn’t terribly mind a roll of the dice.
2024 Women’s Volleyball Gold Medal Winner Prediction
Ultimately, I think the women’s Olympic volleyball gold medal winner is going to be one of three teams. For the most part, online sportsbooks got this right in terms of pricing, too.
Italy is a deserving favorite and is absolutely a threat. They’ve shown what they can do over the past couple of years, and they just might finally have the experience and momentum to rise up to the challenge.
Team USA and Brazil feel like better bets, though. They offer more appealing price tags, and they also have much more experience and more battle tested squads.
It’d be nice to hit my hat to the United States and bank on them repeating as world champions, but I really find it tough to get away from Brazil. They seem to constantly be in the running for a gold medal, and they’ve done nothing to suggest they’ll be going quietly into the night.
Brazil could easily be favored, but they instead hold nice +500 odds. I’d go with them or USA to win this thing, with the Brazilian team narrowly getting the nod.
Bet: Brazil +500
