Pitchers Hungry for a Win Duel for Rockies, Giants

Ryan Feltner and Blake Snell, two pitchers who haven’t kept a success in their past 28 joined starts, are set to face off on Saturday when the San Francisco Giants have the Colorado Rockies for a day/night doubleheader.

Giants’ Solid Start to the Series

The Giants began the series on a high note with a 11-4 triumph on Friday night, thanks to the strong bats of Jorge Soler and Tyler Fitzgerald. The team joined for six hits, including three homers, seven runs, and seven RBIs, leading the Giants to a persuading win.

Rockies’ Striving Pitcher: Ryan Feltner

The Rockies have booked right-hander Ryan Feltner (1-10, 5.19 ERA) for the opener. Feltner hasn’t won since April 12 at Toronto, persevering through a 17-game winless streak as a starter. This streak is tied for the major league lead with Aaron Civale of the Milwaukee Brewers and Chad Kuhl, as of now with the Chicago White Sox.

In spite of his unfortunate record, Feltner contributed well a 3-2 defeat at home against the Giants last Sunday, allowing only three runs (two earned) more than seven innings. He also experienced a 10-5 misfortune in San Francisco on May 17. The 27-year-old has a 0-3 record with a 5.09 ERA in four career starts against the Giants.

“There’s been a couple of times throughout this year where we felt like we had a good roll going,” Feltner said. “I think this is one of those times.”

Giants’ Pitching Troubles: Blake Snell

The Giants are supposed to counter in the opener with left-hander Blake Snell (0-3, 5.83 ERA). Snell’s winless run of 11 straight starts dates back to last September 13 with the San Diego Padres.

Returning from his second stint on the injured list this season, Snell could easily be 3-0 in July, having allowed just two runs and six hits over 18 innings. The Giants won two of the three games, but he didn’t get a decision in any.

“Anytime I take the ball, I expect that we should win, so I’ve got to be better,” Snell said. “We need wins.”

Snell has a 3-2 record with a 3.60 ERA in 12 career starts against the Rockies.

Doubleheader Nightcap

For the doubleheader nightcap, the Giants have announced rookie right-hander Hayden Birdsong (2-0, 3.55 ERA) as their starter. Birdsong dominated the Rockies with a career-best 12 strikeouts in six innings in a head-to-head with Feltner last Sunday, securing the victory.

The Rockies are expected to start right-handed rookie Tanner Gordon (0-2, 10.61 ERA). Gordon has made two starts since his major league debut on July 7 but has yet to face the Giants.

Historical Context

The doubleheader is one of just two on the original Major League Baseball schedule this season, alongside a Texas Rangers-Oakland Athletics twin bill. Several others have been added due to rainouts, including a Seattle-Colorado split in Denver in April.

Interestingly, the last time the Giants played a doubleheader was against the Rockies last September in Denver, due to an earlier rainout. The Rockies swept that pair 9-5 and 5-2.

Rockies’ Recent Performance

Regardless of Friday’s setback, the Rockies have won five of their past eight games, including home series prevails upon the Giants and Red Sox in the past week. They are hoping to regain their force and break the winless streak of Feltner.

Saturday’s doubleheader presents a thrilling an open door for the two teams to make significant steps in their separate campaigns, with the Giants aiming to harden their situation and the Rockies expecting to track down a genuinely necessary triumph.
