The Phillies Can Win If…

Right-hander Orion Kerkering is getting the start for the Phillies today as he faces the Mariners on the road. Kerkering has made 41 appearances this season and has a record of 2-2 with a 2.21 ERA. This year, he has a WHIP of 1.06 and is averaging 9.96 strikeouts per nine innings. Kerkering most recently pitched on July 30th, where he took the loss after giving up one earned run in one inning of work out of the bullpen. Before that outing, he had three straight appearances where he didn’t give up an earned run.

Philadelphia comes into today’s game as the 4th best hitting team in the league at .255 and are also among the league leaders in home runs and on-base percentage. As a team, they are averaging 4.9 runs per game and have been even better at home, where they are averaging 5.3 runs per contest. The Phillies have three players with at least 22 homers, led by Bryce Harper’s 24 long balls.

Alec Bohm has been swinging the bat well of late, going 6/20 over his last five games, and is also on a four-game hitting streak. For the season, Bohm is batting .297 and has driven in 73 runs, which is the best mark on the team. Harper and Kyle Schwarber are also near the top of the league in home runs and have been the team’s top power threats this season.

The Mariners Can Win If…

Seattle is sending right-hander Bryce Miller to the mound today vs. the Phillies. He has made 21 starts this season and has a record of 8-7 with a 3.46 ERA. Miller’s WHIP for the season is currently 1.03, and opponents are batting .212 off him this year. In his last outing, Miller picked up the win, going 6 1/3 innings vs. the White Sox. He gave up three earned runs in the outing. Before that, he had a streak of three straight scoreless outings. Miller has made 11 quality starts this year and is averaging 8.02 strikeouts per nine innings.

Cal Raleigh has been a bright spot for the Mariners offense this season, as he is currently 10th in the league with 67 RBIs and has also gone deep 23 times, which is the best mark on the team. However, he is batting just .214. Julio Rodriguez has been a solid all-around hitter for the Mariners, as he is batting .263 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs.

Over the team’s last nine games, Jorge Polanco has four homers and eight RBIs while batting .242. Victor Robles has also been swinging a hot bat, going 13/38 in this stretch. As a team, the Mariners are averaging just 4 runs per game and are the league’s worst team in terms of striking out.

The Lean

For an over/under pick, our lean is on the over. This game is projected to have the 6th most combined runs in today’s slate and the 9th most hits. As for who is going to take this one straight up, we have our lean on the Mariners to come out on top. Seattle starter Bryce Miller has the 6th best odds to pick up a win among today’s starters.

Justin Turner Seeks Encore as Mariners Face Flustered Phillies

Justin Turner and Randy Arozarena made strong first impressions in Seattle. Playing in front of the home fans for the first time since being acquired in trades in the past week, Turner went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, and Arozarena reached base three times and scored twice Friday night as the Seattle Mariners trounced the Philadelphia Phillies 10-2.

The three-game interleague series between division leaders will continue Saturday night in Seattle.

Mariners’ Offensive Surge

Victor Robles, Luke Raley, and Mitch Haniger also went profound on Friday, and Bryan Charm pitched seven scoreless innings for the Mariners, who won for the fifth time in their past seven games to remain tied with Houston atop the American League West. Robles hit the game’s first pitch 426 feet into the subsequent deck in left field. The Mariners scored seven times in the subsequent inning. Raley hit a three-run shot into the third deck in right field – – a 459-foot blast to turn out to be just the second Mariner to reach that spot in the 25-year history of Safeco Field/T-Mobile Park after Daniel Vogelbach in 2019. Turner later lined his homer over the Phillies’ warm up area in left for his fourth career slam.

“It all started with the first pitch of the game,” Turner said. “Vic goes deep and kind of sets the dugout on fire. It was just good at-bat after good at-bat after that, staying in the zone, fouling off tough pitches, taking walks. It was quality one-through-nine the whole night. Usually, when you get that, it’s when you see quite a few crooked numbers.”

Turner endeared himself to the home fans even before taking a swing as, at the suggestion of his wife, he requested “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden, a legendary Seattle grunge band, as his walk-up music when he came to the plate.

The Mariners have scored six or more runs in six of their past seven games, reaching double digits three times in that span, after totaling just 11 runs over six games prior to that.

“There is spice to this lineup, and it comes from all different directions, but certainly the new guys that we brought in add something and they’re all different,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “Certainly Randy Arozarena has got a different spice than JT (Justin Turner) does. But it’s rubbing off on guys, and you like to see it. All the guys are feeding off each other right now, and it’s the confidence that they have in the guy behind them.”

Phillies’ Struggles

The National League East-leading Phillies suffered their fifth consecutive defeat and are 3-10 since the All-Star break. Their 10-game lead over the Atlanta Braves has been cut in half.

“I mean, I thought I gave a pretty good speech before the game, but I guess it wasn’t good enough,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “You just have to keep grinding, just gotta keep battling.”

Philadelphia’s Bryce Harper went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as his hitless streak reached 23 at-bats.

Right-hander Tyler Phillips, who pitched a shutout against Cleveland in his previous start, couldn’t make it out of the second inning Friday. He allowed eight runs on five hits — including three homers — in 1 2/3 innings.

“I think because of the complete game, stuff was down, command was down,” Thomson said of Phillips. “That’s what I chalk it up to. He’ll get another start.”

Upcoming Pitching Matchup

The Phillies announced after Friday’s game that right-handed reliever Orion Kerkering (2-2, 2.21 ERA) would get the start on Saturday, the second of his career. Kerkering started and pitched one scoreless inning on July 14 against visiting Oakland, a game the Phillies lost 18-3.

Right-hander Bryce Mill operator (8-7, 3.46 ERA) is set to start for Seattle and, such as Kerkering, will face the opponent interestingly. Mill operator went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four July starts.

Game Outlook

As Justin Turner and the Mariners hope to continue their hostile flood, the Phillies should figure out how to break out of their downturn and avoid further lessening their lead in the National League East. With promising freshman Bryce Mill operator on the hill for Seattle and Orion Kerkering making just his subsequent career start for Philadelphia, this game vows to be an intriguing matchup between two teams with altogether different recent trajectories. Fans can anticipate checking whether the Mariners can push their momentum along and in the event that the Phillies can turn their fortunes around.
