Clayton Kershaw’s Return to Form
Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is looking to regain his dominant form as he faces the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. After coming back from offseason shoulder surgery, Kershaw has had two starts. He allowed two runs in four innings against the San Francisco Giants on July 25 and then struggled, giving up seven runs (three earned) in 3 2/3 innings against the San Diego Padres last Wednesday.
One concerning sign was that Kershaw (0-1, 5.87 ERA) didn’t strike out any of the 21 San Diego batters he faced. This was the first time he failed to record a strikeout in 424 regular-season starts over his 17-season career.
“Just wasn’t executing,” Kershaw said, insisting there are no physical issues. “Wasn’t throwing really anything that I wanted to, where I wanted to. Frustrating overall.”
Kershaw’s Track Record and Manager’s Confidence
Even when battling shoulder discomfort last season, Kershaw managed a 13-5 record with a 2.46 ERA in 24 regular-season starts. The Dodgers are confident he can bounce back to that form.
“I think it’s hard to ever bet against Clayton,” said Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts. “… (His current form is) part of the process.”
