The Lean

Today’s Mets and Mariners matchup is projected to be the 8th lowest-scoring game of today’s league slate, but with the line sitting at 7.5 runs, we are still leaning towards the over. As for how we would play the money line in this one, we are leaning towards the Mets to pick up the win. Between the two starters, we have Sean Manaea as our 5th best strikeout option compared to Logan Gilbert, who is 6th.

Mariners Look to Keep Mets’ Edwin Diaz on Ice

As the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners proceed with their three-game interleague series, the Mets are trusting they’ll have to call upon nearer Edwin Diaz as soon as possible. The Mariners kept Diaz out of the game in the series opener on Friday night, because of a predominant 6-0 triumph controlled by Bryce Mill operator’s six scoreless innings. With Diaz’s services not required, the Mets aim to create a situation on Saturday where their former Seattle star can shut the door on his old team.

Diaz’s Fond Memories of Seattle

Edwin Diaz, who spent the first three seasons of his Major League career in Seattle, reflected fondly on his time with the Mariners before the series began. “I got really good memories here. I remember I made my debut here,” Diaz said. “I think that’s the biggest memory I have is when I came up in 2016, my first game was here at Safeco.” The ballpark, now known as T-Mobile Park, was the setting for Diaz’s rise to prominence as one of the league’s premier closers.

Diaz had a standout season in 2018, earning All-Star honors and leading the majors with 57 saves. However, he was traded to the Mets that offseason as part of a package that included second baseman Robinson Cano, a move that marked the beginning of a rebuilding phase for Seattle. Mariners manager Scott Servais, who was in his first season in Seattle when Diaz made his debut, recalled the impact the young closer had. “It was a phenomenal season he had for us (in 2018). It just seemed like he found his stride,” Servais said.

Since moving to New York, Diaz has continued to excel, including an All-Star selection in 2022. Despite missing all of last season due to an injury sustained during the World Baseball Classic, Diaz has returned to form this year, notching 14 saves in 33 appearances, even after dealing with a shoulder injury earlier in the season.

“After that (first) season everything went fine for me,” Diaz said. “I’ve been able to perform the way I want in New York. They go see the numbers; they can see I’ve been able to do my work.”

Mariners Shine in Series Opener

On Friday, the Mariners received significant contributions from some of their younger players to secure the victory. Rookies Ryan Bliss and Leo Rivas, batting eighth and ninth in the lineup, played crucial roles both at the plate and in the field. Bliss opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second inning, while Rivas added a two-run single during a four-run rally in the seventh. The pair also turned a key double play in the seventh inning to preserve a 2-0 lead at the time.

“Can’t say enough about the guys in the middle of the field tonight, the little guys,” Servais said. “What Bliss and Rivas did, they didn’t get out of their game.”

Mets starter Jose Quintana pitched well after giving up Bliss’ homer, retiring 14 straight batters before walking Mitch Garver to start the Mariners’ seventh-inning rally. Despite the rough finish, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised Quintana’s performance. “Obviously, when you look at the box score he gave up five, but he pitched way better than the line score,” Mendoza said. “He was one strike away from giving us seven innings in a two-run ballgame.”

Saturday’s Pitching Matchup

As the series progresses forward with Saturday night, the Mets will send left-hander Sean Manaea (8-4, 3.30 ERA) to the hill. Manaea has been predominant in his last two starts, contributing seven scoreless innings the two trips while keep twofold digit strikeouts in a 2-0 triumph against the Minnesota Twins and a 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Manaea has broad experience against the Mariners, with a 8-7 record and a 3.73 ERA in 17 vocation appearances (16 starts) against them.

The Mariners will counter with right-hander Logan Gilbert (6-8, 3.05 ERA), who has battled since being named an AL All-Star, losing all three of his starts in spite of allowing only one procured run in two of them. Gilbert has confronted the Mets once previously, posting a 1.35 ERA in that excursion.

High Stakes for The two Groups

For the Mets, Saturday’s down addresses an opportunity to return quickly and close the hole in the NL wild-card race, where they stay simply half a game in front of the Atlanta Braves for the third and final spot. In the mean time, the Mariners are attached with the Houston Astros on the AL West and will hope to proceed with areas of strength for them to keep up with their situation in the division.

With the two groups having a lot to play for, the series vows to be a firmly challenged issue, and the Mets will trust that their offense can generate a sufficient lead to bring Edwin Diaz into the game and let him polish off his previous group.
