Week 16 is the last week of the 2024-25 College Football regular season, and it’s unlike any other week of the season. In fact, Week 16 is reserved for one of the sport’s most beloved traditions – the Army vs. Navy game. Additionally, this week also crowns the Commander in Chief’s Trophy winner.
First awarded in 1972, this trophy is given out to the U.S. Military team that wins the season series of games between the Army Black Knights, Navy Midshipmen and Air Force Falcons.
The Commander in Chief’s series of games takes place as follows:
- Week 6 (Oct. 5): Navy Midshipmen vs. Air Force Falcons at Falcon Stadium, USAF Academy, CO
- Week 10 (Nov. 2): Air Force Falcons vs. Army Black Knights at Michie Stadium, West Point, NY
- Week 16 (Dec. 14): Navy Midshipmen vs. Army Black Knights at Commanders Field, Landover, MD
Once Week 16 is concluded, all attention will turn towards Bowl Game Season and the College Football Playoffs. Eventually, teams will dwindle down until we crown the 2024-25 College Football Champion on January 20, 2025.

Each week, we will provide a variety of College Football picks designed to help you make well-informed and strategic decisions throughout the season. For Week 16, we’ll make our predictions for the Army vs. Navy game along with which team will win the 2024 Commander in Chief’s Trophy.
Navy Midshipmen vs. Army Black Knights
In Week 16, these two teams will meet for the 125th time. It’s one game shy of the Army vs. Air Force game, as the longest rivalry among the Military teams.
Currently, the Navy Midshipmen hold an advantage in this rivalry with a 62-55-7 record. However, Army has won the last two games. Additionally, Army is 6-2 in the last eight head-to-head matchups.
As of this publication, the Army Black Knights are expected to have a better record than Navy. However, of the three Military teams, the Air Force Falcons are projected to have the best record this year.
Can Army extend their winning streak to three in a row or will Navy extend its overall lead in this rivalry? Will the winner of this game also capture the Commander in Chief’s Trophy?

Air Force Falcons | Even |
Army Black Knights | +150 |
Navy Midshipmen | +425 |
Air Force General George B. Simler is credited with creating the Commander in Chief’s Trophy. His goal was to create an annual series of games between these teams and reward the winner with a trophy and recognition. As mentioned above, it was first awarded in 1972. In fact, President Richard Nixon presented the trophy that year. Nixon’s act has inspired future Presidents to carry on the tradition.
It should be noted that if two teams finish the series tied, then the award will be shared. However, the team that won it the previous year will maintain physical possession of the trophy. Currently, the trophy as been shared on five occasions, with 2021 being the most recent occurrence.
Air Force Falcons
Heading into the 2024 College Football season, the Air Force Falcons lead this series with the most trophy wins at 21. They last won in 2022, and their first trophy win was in 1982.
Since 1972, Air Force is 31-21 against Navy and 35-17 against Army. That’s a combined record of 66-38 against the other two Military teams.
Last year, Air Force easily defeated Navy, but they were crushed by Army 23-3. This year, the Falcons are projected to have the better team.
Army Black Knights
Currently, the Army Black Knights have won the fewest number of trophies at 10. Since 1972, Army is just 17-35 against Air Force and 20-31-1 versus Navy. They have the worst combined record against the other two teams at 37-66-1.
However, heading into this season, Army is the reigning Commander in Chief’s trophy winner. They also won the inaugural trophy as well. Furthermore, Army has won four of the last six trophies.
Navy Midshipmen
The Navy Midshipmen have captured 16 trophies since 1972, but they haven’t won since 2019. Navy has been solid against Army with a 31-20-1 record since the trophy was introduced.
Unfortunately, they are just 21-31 against Air Force. Even worse, the Midshipmen are 1-7 over the last eight games in this series. They have lost four in a row to Air Force and three of the last four against Army.
Commander In Chief’s Trophy Prediction
The oddsmakers got the odds correct with these three teams. I do believe that Air Force has the best roster heading into the season. Their running game and defense will make them a winning team this year. The Falcons could also contend for the Mountain West Conference title.
Army finished off last year with four straight wins and captured the Commander in Chief’s Trophy. It was a great way for the Black Knights to close out the 2023-24 season and carry momentum into this year. However, there team is slightly less talented than Air Force and most likely won’t be a factor in the AAC Conference title. The Black Knights do offer value and could be a great option for those that like to chase the betting value.
As for Navy, they will be lucky to pick up a victory in this series. This roster appears to be well behind Army and Airforce. Although the Midshipmen will play both games tough, I expect another goose egg in the win column for Navy this season. I also see them finishing near the bottom of the AAC Conference.
At Even odds, Air Force still offers solid value and could actually flirt with being a Top 25 team this year. At the time of this publication, the Falcons are the best bet to win the Commander in Chief’s Trophy for the 2024 season.
Bet: Air Force Falcons (even)
