The Valero Texas Open is next up for the PGA Tour and it’s the final tournament before the Masters. The big question for many is if Rickie Fowler can win this event, so he can make his way back to Augusta next week. He’s among the favorites as he comes in at +1800 along with Corey Conners. Fowler has worked his way back up the OWGR list and is now sitting at No. 59 following the Dell Match Play event.
He’s worked through some rough times with his swing and seems to be getting things back on track. This is a perfect time for Fowler to grab a win as many of the top-ranked golfers are taking a week off. That means the field is a nice mix of top players with plenty of value picks further down the odds list.
The Valero Texas Open was won last year by J.J. Spaun who outpaced Matt Jones and Matt Kuchar. Spaun went 13-under and won by two strokes over the dual Matts! That’s an important stat when it comes to TPC San Antonio – Oaks Course. This event has ended with the winner going past ten-under overall eight of the last ten times. The last playoff happened in 2009.
Here are the favorites to win the 2023 Valero Texas Open outright:
Tyrrell Hatton +1200
Corey Conners +1800
Rickie Fowler +1800
Si-Woo Kim +2000
Hideki Matsuyama +2200
Speaking of playoffs at the Texas Open, that has happened only six times going back to 1991. The strongest win at TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open happened when Corey Conners went 20-under in 2019. Still, he only won by two strokes over Charley Hoffman.

The fairways at the Oaks are a mix of tight tree-lined and wide open, all focusing on hitting second-shot target areas that are protected by tall natural grass roughs. Elevation changes are slight but there are several holes where a ball can get some added roll off the tee. As always, there may be some need to adjust to the winds that are common here.
The greens run medium to large with several false fronts and terraces. Many of them go from putting surface to traditional rough and then natural grass in only a few feet. A misplayed approach shot could be disastrous. Wedges will once again be a major player this week!
2023 Valero Texas Open Predictions
Corey Conners +1800
Corey Conners won this event in 2019 and has played well here over the years. In his 2019 win, he went 20-under with a two-stroke victory. You have to go back to 2003 to Tommy Armour III’s win of 26 under to beat Conners mark. He seems to have a knack for knowing how to play the wind at this course and is great at hitting fairways in the right spot.
Matt Kuchar +2800
Matt Kuchar scored another top-ten last week at the Dell Match Play event. Kuchar plays well on this course as he’s never missed the weekend at this event. He has not slowed down since turning 40 and seems to be in a grove. Kuchar is 11th on Tour in approaches (200 yards) which explains his great play around the greens. All Kuchar needs are four days with a hot putter.
Chris Kirk +2800
Chris Kirk locked in his trip to Augusta by winning at PGA National a few weeks ago so there is not any added pressure on him to perform this week. Kirk is always strong at TPC San Antonio. He’s made the weekend in four of six outings here since 2016 with two finishes inside the top ten. Kirk has had a nice stroke with his putter recently which means he could add to his birdie numbers on the Oaks Course.
Others I Like: I want to go with Rickie Fowler (+1800) and may do so after a look at his practice rounds this week. Fowler has pressure, real or imagined, to win so he can return to the Masters. Luke List (+9000) is always a threat with his putter which is a high-value club when playing the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio.
