The Green Bay Packers can’t possibly be as bad as they were last week against the New Orleans Saints.
Can they?
Clearly oddsmakers are giving them sufficient credit, as they are double-digit favorites. But on Monday night we will see if they have some “bite” as they take on the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.
Check out our Lions vs. Packers MNF picks.
Most of the eyes are on Aaron Rodgers, who was intercepted twice last week and threw for just 133 yards in a 38-3 loss. But the Lions and their developing offense deserve a look, as does the Green Bay defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, who knows Detroit QB Jared Goff very well from the days when they were both with the Los Angeles Rams.
Aaron Rodgers Week 2 Props Picks: Over 283.5 Passing Yards
MNF Props Odds: Over 283.5 yards -115 / Under 283.5 yards -115
There isn’t a defense Rodgers hasn’t seen in his career. So he knows exactly how to chop anything up. And the people formulating Detroit’s defensive game plan are likely going to try to take the long strikes away from him. That’s fine with A.R., as he can dissect them underneath all night long.
Last week the Lions surrendered a passer rating of 136.5 to San Francisco’s quarterbacks (Trey Lance had one attempt, a TD pass), and that is incredibly generous. Their cornerback, Jeff Okudah, is gone for the season with a torn Achilles.
Jared Goff Week 2 Props Picks: Over 35.5 Pass Attempts
MNF Props Odds: Over 35.3 attempts -105 / Under 35.5 attempts -130
Our guess here is that there is a good chance Goff will spend most of the game playing from behind. If you look at last week’s numbers, Goff threw the ball 57 times. It’s not that Dan Campbell has abandoned the run game like so many of his predecessors in Detroit. But he won’t hesitate to use them on short passes, and Green Bay will give them that.
With a shortage of wide receivers (Tyrell Williams is out of the game), Goff is likely to go short to backs and tight end TJ Hockenson. Last week his receivers averaged 6.1 yards per catch. That’s low. But he’ll keep throwing.
Jared Goff Week 2 Props Picks: Longest Completion Under 36.5 Yards
MNF Props Odds: Over 36.5 yards -110 / Under 36.5 yards -130
To begin with, Goff doesn’t have the kind of arm that is going to threaten an opponent down the field on a consistent basis. Green Bay’s defense is going to be designed with the objective of preventing explosive plays. That is what coordinator Joe Barry brings over from the Rams.
So unless Goff gets lucky with a catch-and-run, one should expect him to peck away, rather than hit with lightning strikes.
Davante Adams Week 2 Props Picks: Over 7.5 Receptions
MNF Props Odds: Over 7.5 receptions -105 / Under 7.5 receptions -125
As the Lions are most certainly worried about Rodgers hitting on big plays, they’ll leave room underneath. And listen – there may not be better chemistry between a QB and receiver in all the NFL. They are more than capable of connecting on shorter routes.
And the thing is, we think they’re going to do that a lot. Simple as that.
D’Andre Swift Week 2 Props Picks: Under 10.5 Rushing Attempts
MNF Props Odds: Over 10.5 attempts -125 /Under 10.5 attempts -105
Swift may or may not be the Lions’ best running back. The expectation is that he will make for a nice 1-2 combination with Jamaal Williams, the former Packer.
But Williams – we think – is going to be the guy carrying the ball, while Swift will be sought after in the passing game. That’s the balance we expect in this game. Swift, by the way, proved to be valuable catching the ball last week, with a 43-yard touchdown. He caught eight passes last week.
