The NHL season is moving right along, and despite a few teams keeping a lead by just a thread, there was a lot of action along the betting lines last week.
Take a look to see which of our cappers made the most money betting on the NHL last week (and which one slipped up and barely squeaked by in the green).
Ron Raymond Bets Volume and Makes it Work
Ron Raymond is a newcomer to the NHL top 5 handicapper list, but not to sports betting. He’s been betting for years, and his picks are fairly conservative. If you’ll notice his record, almost all of his wagers are -110 or -115, but he’s winning them. Raymond bets totals like no tomorrow, and he frequently wagers the under on the 6 or 6.5 point line.
One wager that stood out to us was his under 6 on the Ducks vs. Penguins game on Halloween night. As one of the only dog wagers in his lineup, the fact he won is pretty surprising. Other handicappers were betting under 6.5 at favorite odds, but Raymond took a little risk and made it worth it.
By looking at the consensus data we can see that theunder was favored by the sharp money, even though the public had an overwhelming amount on the over.
Watching Raymond in the coming weeks is a good idea, especially his totals wagers. Perhaps he got lucky on that Ducks vs. Penguins game, perhaps he did his research and took a risk. Regardless, following his totals could be an easy path to profit.
Top NHL Handicappers This Week
Last week was a slow one for NHL cappers, but a profitable one nonetheless. Our very own Sas Insider takes the lead with a 7-3 record and a $403 profit. Close on our heels is Ron Raymond, who’s 11-6 with $370 won.
Collectively, the top five cappers last week had a 35-18 record, which is about a 66% win rate overall. This is a marginal improvement over the 32-19 record from last week, a 62% win rate.
Patrick Doyle Reverts to His Old Ways
The handicapper we highlighted last week, Patrick Doyle, was showing improvement over his previous year’s NHL wagers. He struggled in 2023 because he placed too many underdog wagers that fell through, and he started to change that behavior last week.
Well, unfortunately, Doyle has decided that the old dog might learn a new trick.
He’s 2-2 in Week 4 of the NHL, both of his lost wagers were underdog bets. The Calgary Flames moneyline was a close bet, as the Flames were killing it early in the season. But the Rangers game at -1.5 was a bit risky. The Rangers have a pretty good offense, but the Senators have a good defense, so it was a low-scoring game, with the Rangers winning 2-1.
One more point for the Rangers would have seen quite a few wagers come through as winners.
It was a much better idea to wager totals on that game, even if the under 6.5 was at -115. Better to win a little than lose by a hair.
Hopefully, Doyle can get his act together as the season progresses. He showed improvement, but he’s making sloppy wagers now, and it’s a slippery slope to a season full of losses.
Looking Forward to the Next Week
The Panthers are still on the warpath, having beaten the Stars in Finland and coming home victorious. They’re leading the Eastern Conference, with the Carolina Hurricanes close behind.
Meanwhile, in the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets remain the top seed, while the LA Kings are coming in hot on their tail.
On Thursday, Nov. 7 we see the Jets take on the Colorado Avalanche, which should be an easy game for the Jets. But, you never know what Nathan MacKinnon will pull off.
On Saturday, we see the Panthers take on the Flyers. This matchup really isn’t fair, as the Flyers are the worst in the Eastern Conference right now. I’d expect the game to be high-scoring, with the Panthers on the moneyline as favorites.
