Head coach Dave Doeren has the NC State Wolfpack trending in the right direction. The Wolfpack have the second- most wins in the ACC over the past two seasons and beat Clemson 27-21 in double overtime last season. Doeren’s team also beat rival North Carolina in the season finale before the Wolfpack had to cancel their Holiday Bowl appearance against UCLA due to COVID.
NC State has plenty of starters back on both sides of the ball and they committed the fewest turnovers in the ACC last season. The only question heading into 2022 is whether the Wolfpack can handle the high expectations.

Last Season
Doeren’s team won five of its first six games last season, including that win over Clemson. They would end up 9-3 and lost to Miami by a single point and to Atlantic Division champion Wake Forest by a field goal.
The Wolfpack was outstanding on defense limiting opponents to 19.7 points a game (14th in the nation) last season. The offense ended up 19th in passing averaging 288.4 yards per game. Their 33.1 points per game was in the top-30 in the nation.
Wolfpack Key Losses Heading Into 2022
The biggest loss for the Wolfpack was at running back where Zonovan Knight is now a New York Jet. Knight led NC State in rushing with 753 yards rushing last season. Knight shared the backfield with Ricky Person, who signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Person had 636 yards on the ground last season.
2022 NC State Wolfpack Team Preview
Devin Leary might be the best under-the-radar quarterback in the nation. He threw for 3,433 yards and 35 touchdowns last year. In two seasons, he’s thrown nearly 550 passes and has just seven interceptions.
Leary leads seven returning offensive starters for the Wolfpack, including four of five offensive linemen. The defense returns nine starters and could be the best unit in the ACC, which is saying a lot considering that Clemson is in the same division as NC State.
2022 NC State Football Schedule
The Wolfpack have a light non-conference schedule opening the season at East Carolina then facing FCS Charleston Southern in Week 2. Texas Tech and Connecticut are both at home before the start of the ACC schedule.
The conference schedule starts fast and furious – at Clemson. That game will likely determine who wins the Atlantic Division and gets to play for an ACC title. The Wolfpack avoids a crossover with Miami. Of the remaining opponents, only Wake Forest beat NC State last season.
2022 Wolfpack Regular Season Win Total Prediction
The game at East Carolina in Week 1 could be a trap. The Pirates went 5-7 last year and aren’t expected to challenge for much of anything in the American Athletic Conference. Charleston Southern and Connecticut are sure wins. Texas Tech being at home is an advantage there.
Of their ACC games, the most difficult (other than Clemson) are at home – Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Boston College. With one of the nation’s best defenses, an experienced quarterback, and 16 returning starters; the Wolfpack can duplicate last season’s performance.
