Providence Looks to Hand Rhode Island Its First Loss
Providence and Rhode Island are set to renew their heated in-state rivalry on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, R.I., with both teams eager to claim state bragging rights.
Recent Rivalry Dominance
The Friars (6-3) have controlled the series recently, winning eight of the past 10 matchups. However, with Rhode Island (8-0) off to its best start since the 1947-48 season, the Rams and their fans are eager to turn the tide.
Providence coach Kim English expects an electric atmosphere, acknowledging the significance of the matchup.
“There will be more fans than when the (New England) Patriots rolled in there a few years ago,” English said. “It’s great … We’re excited to play a really, really good team.”
Rhode Island’s Perfect Start
The Rams are undefeated through eight games, most recently overcoming Yale 84-78 on Monday. David Green starred with 26 points and nine rebounds, while Sebastian Thomas added 20 points and Jaden House contributed 10.
Green (17.1 points per game), Thomas (16.4), and House (12.8) have been the driving forces for Rhode Island’s offense this season.
Rhode Island coach Archie Miller emphasized the intensity of this matchup, calling it one of the most underrated rivalries in college basketball.
“You have to be in it to know that it’s a big-time game,” Miller said.
Providence Finds Momentum
Providence enters the game after snapping a three-game losing streak with an 83-64 win over BYU on Tuesday. Jabri Abdur-Rahim delivered a spark off the bench, scoring a game-high 21 points, while Bryce Hopkins contributed 16 in his season debut after recovering from a knee injury.
Hopkins’ return is a significant boost for the Friars, who also rely on Jayden Pierre (13.0 points per game) and Bensley Joseph (10.8) to lead their scoring efforts.
