PGA Preview: 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship Picks

Up next for the PGA Tour is the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson Mississippi. It’s a second straight week where a weak field could provide a player with their first Tour Win. This week Scottie Scheffler and Louis Oosthuizen come in as the favorites.

Scheffler comes in at +1000 following a strong run at the Tour Championship. He finished 5th five shots behind winner Dustin Johnson. Oosthuizen comes in trailing slightly at +1200 after he finished lone 3rd at the U.S. Open. These are two of the strongest players in the field.

Last week Hudson Swafford took advantage of the lack of big name players to grab his second PGA victory but sits at +8000 – far below the favorites. Last years Sanderson Farms winner, Sebastian Munoz, rounds out the favorites at +2500.

This is a tournament where the opening favorite is at or above +1000. Meaning, there are plenty of PGA value picks out there. Here are the favorites to win the 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship outright, coming in at +2500 and below, according to Intertops.

The Country Club of Jackson features a natural setting with open fairways dotted with large trees. The course has undergone many renovations over the years with the latest being by John Faught in 2008 which helped set the layout for current PGA Tournaments.

The course features multiple white-sand bunkers set to defend tight approach shots. Water hazards come into play on a few holes with pond grass along the sides of some fairways. It looks wide open.

However, it does have a reputation for luring players into tight situations. Thus a PGA average of 54% when hitting fairways. Second shots off the fairway and putters will be important this week. Reports indicate average to high roughs with fast greens.

2020 Sanderson Farms Championship Betting Tips

I’m betting the favorite this week. Scottie Scheffler has had a run of top-25 finishes with three of those being in the Top-five. Scheffler was heading into the U.S. Open with a hot game before withdrawing due to a positive COVID-19 test. He should pick up where he left off.

Will Zalatoris +1600

Will Zalatoris comes into the tournament following two top-ten finishes at the U.S. Open and the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. He’s posted solid rounds and is gunning for a more permanent position on the PGA. On the Korn Ferry Tour he’s nailed down a win, a second place and third place finish with ten in the top-ten. Of all of his Korn Ferry Tour events on the 2020 calendar (16) he’s finished outside the 25th spot only twice.

Zack Johnson +3300

This would be a perfect opportunity for Zack Johnson to get his game back on track. Johnson is one of the more seasoned, and winngingest, players in the field. He has 12 Tour wins including the Masters in 2007 and the Open Championship in 2015. At the U.S. Open two weeks ago he showed some of his old self finishing T8.

Others I Like

Cameron Davis + Luke List – Cameron Davis comes into the tournament with five straight below the cut finishes. This course will lend itself to his swing – look for some long drives. I’ve been high on Luke List as one of my value picks over the last few tournaments. He showed signs of putting his complete game together last week with a T8 finish, with Will Zalatoris and Cameron Percy, after playing near the top of the leader board for the last two rounds.
