Plenty has happened since the Bermuda Championship was first played only a few years ago in 2019. First, it’s now so popular that it has attracted sponsorship and is now officially called The Butterfield Bermuda Championship. That brings a huge uptick in the purse which has jumped by several millions of dollars.
In addition, the first Bermuda Championship was an alternative event during the 2020 COVID altered PGA schedule, it became a full PGA Tour event with FedEx points and a ticket to the Masters for the champion! That’s attracted a better field than would be expected for an event that was only an alternative event two years ago.
Patrick Reed is a good example of that and he may be the first of the “big name players” that have figured out how important this event can be during the season when it comes to FedExpoints and a two-year exemption.
Matt Fitzpatrick is the lone favorite at +1000 with Reed two spots down the list at +1800. Fitzpatrick is coming off a win on the European Tour at Valderrama Golf Course in Spain while Reed has had a rough time in his last two events by missing one cut at the Shriners and carding a T68 at the CJ Cup.
Here are the favorites coming in at +2000 and under to win the 2020 Butterfield Bermuda Championship outright according to Intertops.
Matt Fitzpatrick +1000
Christiaan Bezuidenhout +1400

2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship Preview
Where: Southhampton Parish, Bermuda
Course: Port Royal Golf Club
Par: 71
Length: 6,842 (PGA)
When: October 28 – 31, 2021
Purse: $6.5 million
TV Coverage: Golf Channel
Port Royal Golf Club gets better every time this event takes place. Now that it is a PGA Tour stop there has been much more attention to detail. It is a Robert Trent Jones-designed course with coastal views that offer stunning views with nice elevation changes to keep players on their toes. You can’t think of this as a “flat” venue.
The course can look open in several places due to the lack of trees but in actuality, many of the fairways play tight. This is due to tricky areas of deep rough with plenty of protective bunkers. Water does come into play on a few holes but cliff drop-offs to the ocean on several of the fairways prove to be more intimidating.
Think of Port Royal as being similar to a “European” style set of links. Complete with ocean winds and targeted golf. Now, switch out the European look of brown seagrasses with lush green Bermuda grass and vegetation.
Port Royal sets up at 6,842 for PGA play. That, combined with the layout of the course, could mean that many of the players will think twice about using a driver or long irons. There are plenty of places where ocean winds come into play forcing players to rely on their short game and putters.
2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship Predictions
Matt Fitzpatrick +1000
Why is Matt Fitzpatrick the favorite this week? Because he’s coming in hot! Fitzpatrick is coming off a big win in Spain at Valderrama Golf Course for the Andalucía Masters. He finished with a bogey-free 69 final round. Before that, he carded a T20 at the BMW Championship.
Patrick Reed +1800
Patrick Reed has been a bit off since struggling with some serious health issues a few months ago with bilateral pneumonia. He was quoted as saying that he was told he could die. So that’s a hard road to come back from. But, he exited the hospital and finished sole 25 at the Tour Championship.
Taylor Pendrith +4000
Taylor Pendrith has had an incredible run in his rookie season. The young Canadian golfer who was a leader at Kent State has already won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour and T23 at the 2020 U.S. Open. Pendrith has only missed two cuts in 2t starts.
Others: Brian Gay (+10000) is a huge longshot this week but he is also the defending Champion of this event. David Lipsky (+5000) has lit up three tours in the last five weeks. He had a T22 at the Fortinet Championship, T5 on the Korn Ferry, and a T4 in Spain for the Andalucía Masters.
