Georgia Aims for Another Upset as No. 17 Oklahoma Visits

The Georgia Bulldogs are riding high after a landmark victory earlier this week and will look to maintain that momentum Saturday when they host No. 17 Oklahoma in Athens, Ga.

Oklahoma Seeks Rebound After Tough Losses

The Sooners (13-2, 0-2 SEC) are discovering the rigors of Southeastern Conference play, dropping their first two league games after cruising through nonconference competition.

Oklahoma fell 107-79 at then-No. 5 Alabama last Saturday before blowing an 18-point lead at home to No. 10 Texas A&M in an 80-78 loss Wednesday.

“That was as tough as tough losses can come,” Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser said of the defeat to Texas A&M. “We did so many good things that we wanted to do, but we didn’t take care of the ball.”

Despite shooting a scorching 54.3 percent from the field and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from 3-point range, the Sooners were undone by 18 turnovers.

Sixth-year senior Brycen Goodine provided a bright spot off the bench, exploding for a season-high 34 points on 9-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc. Starters Jeremiah Fears and Jalon Moore, who average 17.6 and 17.4 points per game, respectively, continue to drive Oklahoma’s offense.

Georgia Eyes Continued Momentum

The Bulldogs (13-2, 1-1 SEC) are coming off one of their most impressive victories in recent memory, an 82-69 win over No. 6 Kentucky on Tuesday. The victory marked Georgia’s first win over a top-10 opponent since 2020 and could propel the Bulldogs into the AP Top 25 for the first time since January 2011 with another strong showing.

Freshman Asa Newell led the way against Kentucky with 17 points, while sophomore Blue Cain contributed 15 points and eight rebounds.

Georgia head coach Mike White is focused on maintaining his team’s trajectory as it navigates a competitive SEC schedule.

“This of course was our biggest win,” White said of the Kentucky game. “We played with a ton of energy and stayed connected throughout. But it’s a different SEC these days. All of these are going to be extremely difficult, so we’ve got to move onto the next one pretty quick.”

The Bulldogs have a balanced attack, with Newell (15.5 points per game), De’Shayne Montgomery (12.6), and Dakota Leffew (12.2) all averaging double figures.

Key Matchup

Oklahoma’s high-powered offense, led by sharpshooter Goodine and the consistent scoring of Fears and Moore, will challenge Georgia’s defense. The Bulldogs’ ability to limit turnovers and control the tempo could be decisive against a Sooners squad that thrives on capitalizing on mistakes.

Historical Context

This is only the second all-time meeting between the programs. Oklahoma won the first matchup 93-90 in Hawaii on Christmas Day in 1987.

With both teams aiming to bolster their résumés in a crowded SEC landscape, Saturday’s showdown promises to be a compelling battle of styles and momentum.
