2022 Oklahoma State Cowboys Win Total Odds and Picks

Some thought the Oklahoma State Cowboys head football coach Mike Gundy was on his way out. Gundy thought otherwise as the Cowboys turned in one of their best seasons in recent history.

Oklahoma State won 12 games last season and came within a few inches of winning the Big 12 championship.

Gundy and the Cowboys return six offensive starters and four defensive starters from a team that finished 12-2 in 2021. The Cowboys finished the season with a 37-35 win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

Do the Cowboys have what it takes to challenge for the Big 12 title and a possible College Football Playoff berth in 2022?

The Cowboys did it on both sides of the ball, but it was the defense that was simply outstanding. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles put together what ended up as the nation’s fifth-best run defense and fifth-best total defense. Oklahoma State allowed 18.1 points per game, which was ninth in the country. The defense was so good, Knowles took the same job at Ohio State.

On offense, QB Spencer Sanders put himself into the upper echelon of quarterbacks with a solid performance last season. He threw for 2,839 and 20 touchdowns and ran for 668 and six more scores. As a senior, he is the leader of a Cowboys offense that averaged over 31 points a game last season.

Oklahoma State Key Losses Heading Into 2022

The big losses for the Cowboys include six scholarship offensive linemen as well as leading rusher Jaylen Warren, who is now a Pittsburgh Steeler. Warren rushed for 1,216 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

The biggest loss for Oklahoma State may very well be Knowles. It will now be up to former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason to run the Cowboys defense. That unit must replace seven starters from last year.

Sanders is the key to the OSU offense as well as the three offensive linemen – C Preston Wilson, OG Hunter Woodard, and OT Jake Springfield – that are back. Sanders will have WR Brennan Presley (50-619) back as well as TE Braden Cassity.

The defense returns three of four up front plus Freshman All-American Collin Oliver. Junior college transfer Xavier Benson will take over one of the linebacker spots and Jason Taylor II is the only returning starter in the secondary.

2022 Oklahoma State Football Schedule

The Cowboys non-conference schedule features three straight home games against Central Michigan, Arizona State, and FCS Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Then, the Cowboys dive into the Big 12 schedule at Baylor right off the bat. It was the Bears that stopped Oklahoma State on four downs at the one-yard line to win the conference championship last year.

Oklahoma State gets Texas Tech, TCU, and Texas in consecutive weeks with the Red Raiders and Longhorns at home. Iowa State, which has had its share of success recently, is also a home game. The annual Bedlam rivalry game, which the Cowboys won last year, is at Oklahoma.

2022 Oklahoma State Regular Season Win Total Prediction

The season starts with three straight wins. Baylor will likely not be as strong as last year, but it’s a road game. The Big 12 can be tricky as there are always upsets.

Still, this is a Cowboys team that will be loaded on offense. It may take the defense a couple weeks, but they will continue to play at a high level. There’s no reason why Gundy and his program couldn’t pull another double-digit win season.
