Georgia, Mike White Chasing Elusive Win at No. 5 Florida

Since Mike White took over at Georgia, he has yet to defeat his former team, Florida, or his successor, Todd Golden.

White and the Bulldogs (14-5, 2-4 SEC) will get another shot at No. 5 Florida (17-2, 4-2 SEC) on Saturday in Gainesville, but history isn’t on their side.

Georgia has lost five straight to Florida under White, with none of the games decided by more than 10 points. Additionally, the Gators have won 11 consecutive games against the Bulldogs dating back to 2019.

Despite the losing streak, this is White’s most talented Georgia team yet, while Golden has also built his strongest Florida squad. Both coaches have improved their programs each year, setting the stage for a crucial SEC showdown.

Bulldogs Looking to Snap Losing Streak

Earlier this month, Georgia cracked the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2011 after back-to-back home upsets of Kentucky and Oklahoma. However, the Bulldogs have since dropped three straight games, struggling to close out tight matchups in the SEC.

On Wednesday, Georgia squandered a 15-point lead in the final 16 minutes and lost 68-65 at Arkansas. The Bulldogs allowed 18 offensive rebounds and missed four of six free throws in the final four minutes.

“That winning margin — that difference between winning and losing — is just so, so, so small,” White said. “Our attention to detail with blocking out really cost us.”

The Bulldogs will rely on freshman standout Asa Newell, who leads the team in points (15.5) and rebounds (6.9). Silas Demary Jr. (11.6 ppg) and Dakota Leffew (11.3 ppg) provide outside shooting threats.

Florida’s Experienced Backcourt Leading the Way

Florida boasts one of the most experienced backcourts in the country with Walter Clayton Jr., Will Richard, and Alijah Martin, who have combined for 309 career Division I starts and 47.4 points per game this season.

On Wednesday, Florida overcame a season-low scoring effort to steal a 70-69 win at South Carolina. Richard’s driving layup with 4.8 seconds left capped a game in which Florida trailed the entire way until the final possession.

In the final minutes:

  • Richard and Clayton hit clutch 3-pointers
  • Martin made a key steal, drew a foul, and sank two free throws

“They’re confident dudes,” Golden said of his backcourt. “They want the ball in their hands in big moments and aren’t afraid to take a big shot.”

Richard has averaged 16.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in five career games against Georgia. Clayton dominated the Bulldogs last season, averaging 20.3 points per game in three victories.

This will be White’s first look at Martin in a Florida uniform, as he transferred from Florida Atlantic this offseason.

What’s at Stake

  • Florida is looking to extend its dominance over Georgia and continue its push for a top SEC seed.
  • Georgia is seeking its first win in Gainesville since 2019 and a much-needed resume boost for March Madness.

With Florida’s elite backcourt and Georgia’s young talent, expect a competitive, high-stakes battle in Gainesville as White tries to finally beat his former team.
