On Sunday, February 2nd, hometown hero Claressa Shields will put her two world titles on the line against the unbeaten Danielle Perkins live from the Dort Federal Event Center in Flint, Michigan.

Shields (15-0, 3 KOs), the focal point of a recently released biopic titled “The Fire Inside,” will defend her WBC heavyweight and WBO light heavyweight titles in this bout. Both fighters will also compete for two vacant heavyweight titles as well.

Perkins (5-0, 2 KOs) put herself in the position to be Shields’ top challenger with a victory last year. Although she’s 13 years older, Perkins is also the bigger fighter with clear height and reach advantages. She’s also not intimidated by Shields’ success or fame.

Claressa Shields Recent Fights

In March 2021, Shields cleaned out the super welterweight division after defeating Marie Eve Dicaire via unanimous decision. She won every round with all three judges.

In February 2022, she competed at middleweight and defeated Ema Kozin to retain her IBF and WBC middleweight titles. Like the Dicaire fight, Shields beat Kozin via unanimous decision after winning every round on the judges’ scorecards.

Her next fight came in October 2022, where she beat Savannah Marshall via unanimous decision. However, this was a closer fight than the two previous ones as the judges scored the bout 97-93, 97-93, and 96-94.

The victory over Marshall earned Shields the WBO middleweight title and made her the undisputed champion of the division. It was also the first time that two female boxers headlined a major venue (O2 Arena) in the UK. It also headlined the first ever all female boxing event.

After this win, Shields cleaned out two weight classes becoming undisputed world champion in both the light middleweight and middleweight divisions. She would have a tune-up fight against Maricela Cornejo in March 2023, where she won via unanimous decision after winning every round with the judges.

The sport’s pound for pound best fighter would then move up in weight again. This time she was heading up to the heavyweight division against Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse. However, the bout would end up being contested at the 175-pound light heavyweight division.

So, when Shields won again, she would end up capturing the WBC and WBF world heavyweight titles along with the WBO light heavyweight bout that was vacant. Shields crushed Lepage-Joanisse with a 2nd round TKO.

The fight against Danielle Perkins will not only be for Shields’ WBC and WBF heavyweight belts, but it will also be for the vacant IBF and WBO heavyweight championships.

Shields made the following comments about her upcoming bout with Perkins:

“She is fighting against the best, and if she comes in there and she don’t put her chin down, and she feels like she can just come out there and bully me and put her size and her weight on me and just punch me hard and that’s going to win her the fight, she’s in for a rude awakening. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.’ So Joanisse made a pretty big noise when she fell and I plan on making Danielle Perkins make a bigger noise than that.”

Claressa Shields Odds

Shields opened as a -2000 favorite against Perkins and is currently sitting in a range of -1400 to -2500. This is a drop-off from her previous bout against Lepage-Janisse where Shields closed as a -2500 to -3500 betting favorite. She had even larger odds against Cornejo at -4500 to -8300.

The closest odds that we can find for Shields was her bout against Savannah Marshall. The challenger closed at +100 to +110, while Shields closed at -110 to -136.

Danielle Perkins Recent Fights

Danielle Perkins turned professional in 2020, and had her first fight in August of that year. She went the full four rounds and defeated Monika Harrison via unanimous decision after winning every round with the judges.

Her second fight came four months later and she defeated Princess Hairston via 5th round knockout. Another four months after that, Perkins beat Monika Harrison for a second time. And like their first bout, she won via unanimous decision after taking every round.

Perkins would not box again for three years until she stepped back into the ring in March 2024. This time, she crushed Timea Nagay via 2nd round TKO. Her last bout came in July 2024, where she won via unanimous decision over Christianne Fahey.

Despite having less professional experience than her opponent, Perkins is very confident heading into the biggest fight of her career:

“I am more than excited to get in ring with one of the best fighters in the world. I am looking forward to showcasing my skill set to the world and winning my second, third and fourth title belts in Flint. I won the WBC silver belt there in 2020 and I coming back to make another statement.”

Danielle Perkins Odds

Although this is the sixth fight of her pro career, this weekend’s title fight is the only bout where we can find boxing odds for Perkins. She opened as a +1180 underdog, and currently sits in a range of +720 to +1000 odds.

Shields vs. Perkins Predictions

Perkins is the biggest fighter that Shields has faced inside a boxing ring. The champ is giving up four inches in height and reach to her challenger. She’s also the oldest fighter that the champ has faced with a 13-year age difference. Conversely, Perkins has never fought someone with the skills of Shields. In fact, it’s hard to say that Perkins has faced anyone of credibility in her five pro bouts.

Perkins will try to smother Shields in this matchup, but the champ is too talented for that. I expect Shields to stick and move, use her speed advantage, and avoid any troublesome scenarios.

The champ has the power to win via TKO/KO but I’m not sure that Perkins will get knocked out. The safe play is for this bout to go the full distance and Shields to cruise to a unanimous decision victory. Perkins is not on her level and will lumber around too much to keep up with Shields’ pace.

As of this writing, there aren’t any other wagers to bet on. Sportsbooks are taking their time with releasing odds for the Over/Under and other popular boxing prop bets.
