Surging SMU Hosts Pitt, Seeking Fifth Straight Win
SMU is on a roll, and the Mustangs will look to keep the momentum going when they host Pittsburgh in a key Atlantic Coast Conference showdown on Tuesday in Dallas.
Mustangs Riding High in ACC Play
SMU (18-5, 9-3 ACC) has won four straight games and seven of its last eight, proving it can compete with the best in one of the toughest conferences in college basketball.
In their last game—a gritty 81-75 road win over Virginia Tech—the Mustangs showcased their depth and composure.
- Matt Cross led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds.
- Chuck Harris stepped up late, scoring 13 of his 20 points in the final 12 minutes.
- Samet Yigitoglu (12 points), Kario Oquendo (11), and Boopie Miller (10) rounded out a balanced attack.
Even more impressive? SMU committed a season-low six turnovers, a testament to their disciplined play.
“That’s a credit to our players and our guards—they did a really good job,” SMU coach Andy Enright said. “We took care of the ball. We shared it. Had 16 assists, only six turnovers. That’s a formula to give yourself a chance to win.”
Since opening ACC play with back-to-back losses against Duke and North Carolina, SMU has rebounded to become one of the conference’s most dangerous teams.
Pitt Looking for a Turnaround
Pittsburgh (14-9, 5-7 ACC) is coming off a heartbreaking 67-66 loss at North Carolina—its third straight defeat and seventh in its last nine games.
The Panthers battled the Tar Heels in a back-and-forth contest featuring 13 lead changes and 11 ties.
- Cameron Corhen (17 points) and Jaland Lowe (15 points) led the Panthers’ offense.
- Pitt had two chances in the final minute to take the lead but couldn’t convert.
Despite their struggles, the Panthers remain competitive. Seven of their nine losses have come in Quad 1 matchups, and five of those were decided by six points or fewer.

“We’re losing the games ourselves,” Pitt forward Zack Austin said. “At the end of the day, it’s up to us to fix it. We can’t change the past. We just have to go win these next eight games.”
One major concern for Pitt is the loss of Damian Dunn (9.9 PPG, 41.2% from 3-point range), who fractured his elbow against North Carolina and is likely done for the season.
What’s at Stake?
Both teams are hovering near the NCAA Tournament bubble, with SMU sitting 40th in NET rankings and Pitt at 47th. A win for either squad could be crucial in strengthening their postseason resume.
SMU’s balanced attack and disciplined play make them favorites at home, but Pitt’s ability to battle top teams should make this a close contest. Can the Mustangs extend their winning streak, or will the Panthers finally break through?
