Banged-Up Providence Hopes to Stop 3-Game Skid vs. Xavier
The Providence Friars will try to snap a three-game Big East losing streak when they host the Xavier Musketeers on Wednesday night. Both teams are looking to bounce back after recent struggles.
Can Providence Overcome Its Injury Woes?
Providence (11-13, 5-8 Big East) has been hit hard by injuries, losing both Bryce Hopkins and Jabri Abdur-Rahim for the season due to knee injuries. In their absence, Bensley Joseph stepped up with a game-high 26 points, and sophomore Rich Barron had a career-high 23 in an 82-81 loss to Butler on Saturday.

Despite the offensive explosion—Joseph and Barron combined for 12 three-pointers—the Friars struggled defensively, allowing Butler to shoot 50 percent from the field.
“We dug ourselves in a hole by not having a sustainable, disciplined effort defensively,” Friars coach Kim English said. “The guys showed great resolve to make it a game.”
Providence has now lost five one-possession games this season, including two during its current three-game skid.

Can Xavier Fix Its Defensive Issues?
Xavier (14-10, 6-7 Big East) is also dealing with defensive concerns, allowing at least 40 second-half points in each of its last three games. The Musketeers dropped an 80-68 decision at Villanova on Sunday.
“Some of it is execution and us detailing a number of things to get better at. Some of it has to come from within yourself,” Xavier coach Sean Miller said.
Second-leading scorer Ryan Conwell (15.5 ppg) had a rough outing against Villanova, scoring just three points after dropping 34 in the previous matchup. Meanwhile, Dante Maddox Jr. stepped up with a season-high 24 points.
Series History and Playoff Implications
This is the first meeting of the season between Providence and Xavier, with the Musketeers holding a 12-11 edge in the series since joining the Big East. The teams will meet again on March 8 in Cincinnati to close the regular season.
Will the Friars find a way to snap their skid, or will the Musketeers tighten up their defense on the road?
