The Match 4 Golf Betting Odds, Preview and Predictions

The fourth edition of The Match offers sports fans and bettors a nice mid-summer opportunity to cash in a celebrity golf match.

The Match 4 will take place on Tuesday, July 6, at The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Montana. The 8,000-yard course was designed by the legend himself, Jack Nicklaus.

The pairings and odds are as follows:

Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady (+133)

Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers (-170)

Last year’s U.S. Open winner DeChambeau and the reigning NFL MVP Rodgers are favored to win over Mickelson, who surprised everyone and won the 2021 PGA Championship, and Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.

How will it all play out?

The Match History

Mickelson is no stranger to his event. He has played in every one so far and his record is 2-1. He won The Match 3 last year with partner Charles Barkley. The pair upset two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry and NFL Hall of Famer-to be Peyton Manning.

Mickelson’s win at the PGA at age 50 was certainly noteworthy, but it is also worth noting that Lefty is ranked 32 nd in the world right now and had only finished in the top 50 of a tour event four times (out of 14) this season prior to the PGA.

The Favorites

DeChambeau is much closer to his prime than Mickelson, who surpassed it long ago. The big hitter is currently No. 4 in the world and he has finished in the top-10 six times this season. As mentioned, he won the 2020 U.S. Open and the Arnold Palmer in March 2021. DeChambeau has only missed one cut this season, sits in first in the FedExCup standings, and is first on this year’s money list.

Oh, and he’s also No. 1 on the tour in driving distance. That is important as well will see momentarily. DeChambeau’s partner, Rodgers, is the better golfer among he and Brady. Rodgers has an official handicap of 4.6 (his best is reported to be 3.5) compared to Brady’s 8.1.

The Course

Moonlight Basin has five par 5s, three of which are more than 600 yards. One of those is over 750. The course is huge and that favors DeChambeau and his notoriously long drives. He will have the advantage over Mickelson who ranks 48th on the tour in average driving distance.

Mickelson and Brady will not be able to afford many mistakes in the modified alternate shot play. Each player will hit a drive and pick the best one. The players will then alternate shots until the hole is completed. The longer course certainly favors the bigger hitter in DeChambeau.

The Match 4 Golf Pick

The favorite has won this event two out of three times. Mickelson and Barkley won last year as +138 underdogs. Everything points to DeChambeau and Rodgers. The longer course is suited to DeChambeau’s long drives.

But, you have to remember, this is Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson we’re talking about. Both have defied the odds before, most recently this year. At +133 odds, Mickelson and Brady have implied odds of winning of nearly 43 percent.

Forty-three percent is enough for me to bet on the underdog.
