Virginia Out to Avoid Sweep at Rival Virginia Tech

Virginia Cavaliers looks to avenge an earlier loss to Virginia Tech when the in-state rivals meet Saturday in Blacksburg, Va., for the 160th edition of their heated series.

The Hokies won the first matchup 75-74 on Feb. 1 in Charlottesville, and with another victory, they would complete their first regular-season sweep of Virginia since 2010.

Andrew Rohde’s Evolution Powering Virginia’s Offense

One of the biggest reasons for Virginia’s recent turnaround is Andrew Rohde’s remarkable improvement as a playmaker.

In his first 12 games, the junior guard had 27 assists and 29 turnovers. Over the last 12 games, he has completely flipped the script with 66 assists and just eight turnovers.

His recent three-game stretch has been even more impressive:

  • 25 assists, 0 turnovers
  • 8-of-16 shooting from 3-point range

“When we think back to the beginning of the season, turnovers were our plague,” Virginia interim coach Ron Sanchez said. “Rohde’s playing fantastic basketball at that point guard position. He’s really settled in. He’s the guy that calms us.”

With Rohde leading the offense, Dai Dai Ames has delivered his two best scoring performances of the season, posting 27 points against Pitt and 18 against Georgia Tech.

Virginia has now won three of its last four games, with its only loss in that stretch coming against Virginia Tech.

Hokies Ready for the Challenge

Like Virginia, Virginia Tech has also won three of its last four and enters this matchup fresh off a week of rest.

The Hokies rallied from a 14-point deficit to win 65-63 at Notre Dame last weekend, with Brandon Rechsteiner and Tobi Lawal leading the charge.

Rechsteiner sealed the win at the free-throw line, making 7 of 8 in the final 32 seconds, while Lawal scored 11 of his 15 points in the last 12 minutes.

Rechsteiner knows Virginia will be out for revenge.

“Last year, they know what happened when they came in here,” he said, referencing Virginia Tech’s dominant 75-41 win over the Cavaliers last season in Blacksburg.
