Xavier and Red-Hot Dante Maddox Jr. Look to Sweep DePaul

Xavier will attempt to keep its momentum rolling when it hosts DePaul on Saturday in a Big East battle in Cincinnati.

The Musketeers (15-10, 7-7 Big East) are coming off a crucial 91-82 road victory over Providence on Wednesday, fueled by a career night from Dante Maddox Jr.

Maddox Jr. Leading the Charge for Xavier

Maddox matched career highs with 26 points and six 3-pointers in the win over Providence. It was his second straight 20-point performance, following a 24-point effort in a loss to Villanova last weekend.

Xavier has alternated wins and losses over the past seven games as it fights for one of the five bye spots in the Big East Tournament.

“We play them at noon (ET) on Saturday. It’s gonna be a very quick turnaround,” Xavier coach Sean Miller said. “Chris Holtmann is doing a great job with their program, and they’re a dangerous team.”

Xavier already defeated DePaul once this season, earning a 77-63 victory in Chicago on Jan. 11 behind 20 points and 10 rebounds from Zach Freemantle.

DePaul Struggling in Big East Play

After an 8-2 start under first-year head coach Chris Holtmann, DePaul (11-14, 2-12) has struggled mightily in conference play.

Making matters worse, the Blue Demons lost starting guard Conor Enright to season-ending shoulder surgery earlier this month. NJ Benson also exited Tuesday’s loss to No. 18 Marquette with an injury and did not return.

Despite those setbacks, DePaul fought hard against the Golden Eagles, trimming a 16-point deficit to just eight with two minutes remaining before ultimately falling 68-58.

“So it’s been a couple games here where we’re struggling a little bit with playmaking with Conor out,” Holtmann said. “We’ve got to figure those things out quickly.”

CJ Gunn led DePaul with 14 points in the loss, but the Blue Demons must find more offensive firepower if they hope to challenge Xavier on the road.

Who Has the Edge?

Xavier has been inconsistent, but Maddox’s scoring surge gives the Musketeers an extra offensive boost. Meanwhile, DePaul is banged up and has lost six of its last seven games.

Can Xavier sweep the season series and stay in the hunt for a Big East bye, or will DePaul pull off a road upset?
