However, coach Kim English emphasized that the victory was fueled by strong defensive play.

“We really had to get back to defense,” English said. “We have to guard. That’s our focus moving forward, playing great defense against Georgetown.”

Providence is 5-1 in Big East play when holding opponents under 70 points, making defense a key factor heading into this rematch.

Georgetown Faces Injury Concerns After Loss to Butler

The Hoyas (15-10, 6-8 Big East) are coming off a 97-86 loss at Butler and could be without star freshman Thomas Sorber. The Big East Freshman of the Year contender, who averages 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds, exited the Butler game with a lower-body injury after scoring 10 points in just 12 minutes.

His potential absence would be a major blow for Georgetown, especially since he and Micah Peavy (15.4 PPG) combined for 52 points in the first meeting against Providence.

“Scoring 86 points and losing the game is unacceptable,” Georgetown coach Ed Cooley said after the Butler loss.

Cooley, who coached Providence for 11 seasons, is 0-4 against his former team since taking over at Georgetown.
