Georgetown Seeks Another Upset as Creighton Fights to Rebound in Big East Clash
The Big East landscape has shifted dramatically since Georgetown shocked Creighton with an 81-57 rout in their conference opener on Dec. 18. Now, as the two teams prepare to face off again on Sunday in Omaha, Neb., their seasons have taken very different paths.
Creighton (18-8, 11-4 Big East) is NCAA Tournament-bound and looking to secure a high seed, while Georgetown (16-10, 7-8 Big East) is fighting to keep its postseason dreams alive.
A win for the Hoyas would complete a season sweep, mark their first back-to-back victories of 2024, and reignite their flickering NCAA hopes. For Creighton, this is about revenge and re-establishing dominance on their home court after two consecutive losses.
Georgetown Riding Emotional High After Signature Win
Georgetown is coming off one of its biggest wins of the season, a 93-72 statement victory over Providence on Wednesday. The game was deeply personal for head coach Ed Cooley, who secured his first win against his former team while mourning the loss of his mother, who passed away earlier in the week.
“This was really a signature win for me as a coach—not just because of the opponent, but because of the adversity we were facing,” Cooley said.
And the Hoyas did it without two key starters—Thomas Sorber (turf toe) and Caleb Williams (injury).
With Georgetown shorthanded, Micah Peavy put on an unforgettable performance, recording a career-high 30 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and six steals.
Peavy was also instrumental in Georgetown’s first victory over Creighton, where he stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 7 steals. His relentless defense completely disrupted the Bluejays, as he stole the ball four times in less than five minutes—each time finishing with a breakaway dunk.
If the Hoyas are going to stun Creighton again, Peavy will need another monster effort.

Creighton Looks to Snap Losing Streak and Find Its Shooting Touch
The Bluejays enter this matchup on a two-game skid, following losses to No. 9 St. John’s (79-73) and UConn (70-66). The defeats snapped a nine-game winning streak and exposed some key weaknesses.
Creighton’s biggest problem? Shooting struggles from beyond the arc. In their last two losses, the Bluejays have hit just 15 of 54 three-pointers (27.8%)—a massive drop-off from their usual efficiency.
Additionally, their defensive discipline has slipped. Against St. John’s, Creighton allowed 29 free throws, while taking just 15 of their own.
Head coach Greg McDermott acknowledged the need for better defense.
“We’ve won the free throw-allowed battle all year long,” McDermott said. “For us to shoot 15 free throws and for them to shoot 29, we’re not doing what we’re supposed to do.”
Despite the setbacks, Steven Ashworth had a standout performance against St. John’s, dropping 23 points and 11 assists, while Ryan Kalkbrenner chipped in 12 points—although he was limited by a foot injury in the second half.
Creighton will need Kalkbrenner at full strength and their shooters to regain their touch if they hope to avoid an upset at home.
Hostile Environment Awaits the Hoyas
Winning in Omaha is never easy, and Ed Cooley knows it.
“We gotta go to Creighton. We know it’s gonna be a monster in there,” Cooley said. “It seems like every time we go to Creighton, it’s dollar beer night.”
With Georgetown seeking a season sweep and Creighton desperate to avoid a third straight loss, this game has major implications for both teams.
Will the Hoyas shock the Bluejays again, or will Creighton protect its home court and get back on track?
