Penguins vs. Rangers: Both Teams Seek Redemption After Tough Losses

The Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers didn’t exactly restart the NHL season the way they wanted. Both squads suffered brutal defeats Saturday, but they won’t have to wait long for redemption. On Sunday, they clash in Pittsburgh, each hoping to shake off their recent struggles.

Rangers Look to Regroup Quickly

New York, sitting four points behind Ottawa and Detroit in the Eastern Conference wild-card race, had a nightmare start in Buffalo. The Rangers found themselves in a 5-0 hole after the first period, eventually falling 8-2.

Forward J.T. Miller, who assisted on both Rangers goals, admitted that rust from the two-week 4 Nations Face-Off break was expected—but the real issue? Lack of defensive support for the goalies.

“Tomorrow’s a big game. If we wake up pouting, we’re in trouble,” Miller said. “It sucks now, but we’ve got a task at hand, and I expect us to respond.”

Miller, acquired from Vancouver in late January, has been solid for New York, tallying six points (2G, 4A) in six games. Meanwhile, Chris Kreider’s power-play goal was his 17th of the season, tying him with Camille Henry for the Rangers’ all-time man-advantage goals record (116).

Penguins Collapse After Strong Start

Unlike New York, Pittsburgh didn’t start slow. In fact, they controlled much of their game against Washington—until things unraveled fast. A close 2-2 matchup spiraled into an 8-3 loss as the Capitals scored five unanswered goals.

Head coach Mike Sullivan wasn’t pleased, calling out his team’s bad habits.

Despite being a game-time decision after playing for Team Canada, Sidney Crosby suited up and scored his 18th goal of the season, tying Bobby Hull (610 goals) for 18th in NHL history.

The loss leaves Pittsburgh at 55 points, still three behind the Rangers, but dead last in the Metropolitan Division. With Buffalo creeping up just four points behind, the Penguins can’t afford another meltdown.
