Magic Sticking Together, Aiming for Revenge on Raptors
The Orlando Magic will try to shake off a three-game losing streak and even the season series when they host the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night.
Magic Look to Respond After Tough Loss
Orlando (1-4 on its seven-game homestand) nearly pulled off a massive fourth-quarter comeback on Sunday, trimming a 19-point deficit before falling 104-102 to Toronto.
Franz Wagner (25 points) and Paolo Banchero (23 points) led the charge, but Wagner’s potential game-tying layup with two seconds left didn’t fall, handing the Magic their third straight loss.
Banchero emphasized that the team’s struggles weren’t just about the final shot.
“It’s tough,” Banchero said. “We made some huge plays in those last 2 1/2 minutes. We gave ourselves a chance to win the game at the end, but you can’t point to the last play and say that’s why we lost.”
A major issue for Orlando was its lack of interior presence. Toronto dominated the paint, outscoring the Magic 58-38, while Jakob Poeltl’s six offensive rebounds helped the Raptors control second-chance opportunities.
Despite their recent struggles, the Magic remain united, according to guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
“We’re together. We win together. We lose together,” Caldwell-Pope said. “Everybody is still trying to uplift each other. We’re still trying to get out of this slump together.”
Raptors Gain Confidence After Ending Losing Streak
Toronto had lost three straight before Sunday’s road win, and Immanuel Quickley led the charge with 24 points, including 17 in the second half.
“Just mental toughness. When you’re not making shots, what else can you do to help the team win?” Quickley said. “Resilient players, great players, they just keep shooting.”
RJ Barrett (22 points) and Poeltl (16 points, 11 rebounds) also played key roles, while Scottie Barnes struggled, scoring just 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting.
Barnes still leads Toronto in assists (6.1) and steals (1.4) while ranking second in scoring (19.8 PPG) behind Barrett (21.7 PPG).
The Raptors have now won two of three against Orlando this season, including a 109-93 victory on Jan. 21.
Injury Update: Raptors Lose Gradey Dick
Toronto suffered an injury scare on Sunday when Gradey Dick took a hard hit, colliding with RJ Barrett and Orlando’s Cole Anthony.
Head coach Darko Rajakovic later revealed that while Dick passed concussion protocol, he suffered a knee hyperextension, a bone contusion, and a split lip.
He will not play on Tuesday.
