The top-rated online sportsbooks covering college football are busy filling in their NCAAF futures boards with betting odds to win all 10 Division IA (FBS) conference titles for the upcoming season.
As one of five major conferences in the nation, the battle to win the Big 12 title always attracts quite a bit of interest from the betting public.
Betting the Big 12 Favorite
Looking at the posted NCAAF futures to win the Big 12 title this season, it is no big surprise that the Oklahoma Sooners top the list as -130 favorites. The Sooners have been the class of this conference for the past several seasons and they could have one of their best teams in quite some time heading into the 2021 season.
Leading the way is Heisman Trophy contender Spencer Rattler at quarterback. His betting odds to be named college football’s most outstanding player are the best on the board at +500. If he can play to expectations, there is a good chance that Oklahoma rolls to the Big 12 title this year.
Rattler is also being touted as the favorite to go first overall in next year’s NFL college player draft. He will definitely have a chance to impress both the Heisman Trophy voters and the NFL scouts with a return to a full 12-game schedule this year.
Beyond Rattler, the Sooners are shaping up to also be a legitimate national title contender. They are third on that futures board at +650 behind the SEC’s Alabama Crimson Tide (+260) and the ACC’s Clemson Tigers (+500) as perennial favorites.
Oklahoma opens the 2021 season with tune-up games against Tulane and Western Carolina. The first test against a major program is a home game against the Big Ten’s Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sept. 18.
This season’s Red River Rivalry against the Texas Longhorns will be played on Oct. 9. Beyond that, Iowa State at home (Nov. 20) and Oklahoma State on the road in the regular season final are two more games of note.
The Sooners will play a 12-game season with a projected win total of 11 games. The current betting odds are set at -115 for the OVER and the UNDER.
A Few to Watch in the Big 12
The second-favorite on the Big 12 futures board is Iowa State at +260 odds coming off a very successful 2020 campaign. The Cyclones went 8-1 straight-up in conference play to finish first in the regular season college football standings.
Repeating that level of success is going to be hard to do. Iowa State could make things interesting in that late-season showdown against the Sooners but playing that game on the road drains value from these odds.
Texas is the third favorite to win the 2021 Big 12 title at +450 odds. Given the early-season meeting against Oklahoma at a neutral site, you cannot rule the Longhorns out of this race. An upset in October could set the stage for another neutral-site rematch in early December with the conference championship on the line.
The odds really drop off from there with the rest of the conference playing for a decent bowl game in the postseason.
Stick with Oklahoma at -130 odds as the “best bet” pick to win the Big 12 this year.
