No. 6 St. John’s, Creighton Collide in Search of Elusive Big East Title
A Championship Clash Decades in the Making
St. John’s and Creighton have had the same mission all season: win a Big East title. Now, only one can achieve that goal as the top-seeded Red Storm (29-4) face second-seeded Creighton (24-9) in the Big East Championship on Saturday.
For St. John’s, it’s a shot at their first Big East tournament title since 2000. For Creighton, it’s their fifth attempt at winning the conference title since joining the Big East in 2013—all four previous tries ended in heartbreak.
St. John’s Overcomes Early Hole to Advance
The No. 6-ranked Red Storm punched their ticket to the title game with a dominant 79-63 win over No. 25 Marquette on Friday, but not before erasing an early 15-point deficit.
The star of the night? Zuby Ejiofor. The Big East’s Most Improved Player delivered a historic 33-point performance, with 23 of those coming in the second half.
“It’s been a crazy ride. Last year didn’t go as planned. This year, we’re putting ourselves in a great position to go to the NCAA Tournament,” Ejiofor said.
St. John’s forced 17 turnovers and held Marquette to just 39% shooting, a defensive intensity they’ll need against Creighton.
“This was a brilliant night for us,” coach Rick Pitino said. “Now we’re in the championship game.”
Creighton Overcomes Adversity, Stuns UConn
The Bluejays entered the season with high hopes, but a season-ending hip injury to Pop Isaacs in December forced them to adjust on the fly.
Despite the setbacks, Creighton secured a 71-62 semifinal win over third-seeded UConn on Friday, thanks to a career-high 19 points from Jasen Green, who shot an impressive 8-for-10 from the field.

“We’ve had a lot of adversity,” Creighton coach Greg McDermott said. “We lost our second-leading scorer eight games in, and here we are in the Big East championship game.”
The Bluejays shot 52% from the field, including a scorching 75% in the first half to build an early 11-point lead. Ryan Kalkbrenner, the heart of Creighton’s defense, was limited to 12 points but will need to be a bigger factor in the title game.
A Rubber Match for the Title
The two teams split their regular-season meetings:
- Dec. 31: Creighton edged out a 57-56 win at home, led by Steven Ashworth’s 18 points.
- Feb. 16: St. John’s won 79-73 at home, powered by 41 combined points from RJ Luis and Ejiofor.
“They just come at you in waves,” McDermott said about St. John’s. “They wear into you with their tenacity and physical nature of their play.”
