The Lean
For a moneyline bet, I’m backing the Canadiens to secure a victory over the Avalanche at home. With the moneyline currently set at +155, I’m locking in my bet on the Canadiens straight-up.
Our projections have the Canadiens pulling out a win as the underdog. But if you’re not as bullish as we are on the Canadiens, we’d recommend at least getting a bet down on them to cover the puck line.
For those looking at the over/under line set at 6 goals, our expectation is that this game will surpass that mark, and we suggest making a bet on the over.
Avalanche, Canadiens Clash as Both Ride Late-Season Surges
Two of the NHL’s hottest teams will collide Saturday night in Montreal as the Colorado Avalanche visit the Canadiens, with both squads looking to extend impressive runs and strengthen their playoff positions.
The Avalanche (42-25-3, 87 points) have surged to a 9-1-1 record over their last 11 games, pushing themselves firmly into the Western Conference playoff race. Colorado enters the final game of a three-game road swing on the heels of a dominant 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, powered by a four-goal first period.
“I’m really happy with it… the effort, the competitiveness and the execution,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “We had a handful of chances in the first period, but they were good chances and we capitalized.”
New acquisition Brock Nelson scored his first two goals with the Avalanche, while Cale Makar had a goal and an assist. Nathan MacKinnon continued his MVP-caliber campaign by scoring his 28th goal and adding to his league-leading totals in assists (77) and points (105).
“You can tell in the new guys, their confidence keeps going up and up,” Makar said. “The chemistry in the lines is starting to get there.”
Canadiens Continue Climb in East
Montreal (33-27-8, 74 points) has been just as impressive, going 8-1-3 in their last 12 games to take over the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens nearly added another win Thursday before falling 4-3 in overtime to the Islanders, despite a spirited comeback from a two-goal deficit.
“We’re rolling pretty good right now. We feel comfortable in any situation,” said veteran forward Brendan Gallagher. “Everybody’s playing good hockey right now… it’s different people every night, but right now we got it going pretty good.”
Cole Caufield, who leads Montreal with 33 goals, was the hero in their previous meeting against Colorado, scoring in the third period and again in the shootout to lift the Habs to a 2-1 win in Denver on Jan. 4.
Nick Suzuki continues to be Montreal’s offensive engine, notching an assist Thursday to push his season totals to 50 assists and 71 points. He’s tallied 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) over his last 12 games.
