Cavaliers continue quest to clinch East when battling Spurs
The Cleveland Cavaliers are just two steps away from clinching the Eastern Conference’s best record and they’ll try to take one of those steps Friday night when they face the San Antonio Spurs on the road.
The Cavaliers (61-15) hold a commanding five-game lead over the Boston Celtics with six games left on the calendar. Cleveland enters Friday’s contest on a two-game win streak, with victories in five of their last six — including a 124-116 home win over the Spurs on March 27.
In their most recent outing, the Cavaliers rolled past the New York Knicks 124-105. Donovan Mitchell led the way with 27 points, while Jarrett Allen added 21 points on a sizzling 10-of-11 shooting night. Contributions also came from Darius Garland (17 points), De’Andre Hunter (16 off the bench), Evan Mobley (13), and Isaac Okoro (11).
Cleveland used a 15-2 spurt that straddled the third and fourth quarters to put away New York. The win further lowered the Cavaliers’ magic number to just two — any combo of Cleveland wins or Boston losses totaling two will officially crown them the East’s top team.
Coach Kenny Atkinson isn’t taking anything for granted.
“You know how hard this league is,” Atkinson said. “There’s no guarantees. Every game is a grind. We’re not there yet.”

Spurs chasing hope, clinging to play-in life
The Spurs (32-44) got a much-needed morale boost on Wednesday, defeating a heavily depleted Denver Nuggets squad 113-106. Stephon Castle came close to a triple-double, notching 15 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists. Harrison Barnes led the team with 20 points, while five players scored in double figures.
The win ended a five-game skid, but even with that success, San Antonio’s playoff outlook remains grim. The Spurs sit in 13th in the Western Conference — four games behind the 10th-place Sacramento Kings with six to go.
The Spurs managed the win despite missing key contributors — Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan all sat out due to injuries.
“It was a good team win,” Barnes said. “Everyone who stepped in made big plays. I’m proud of the young guys for taking advantage of the opportunity.”
