Group H features an exciting blend of teams, with nations from Europe, South America, Asia and Africa set to lock horns. Will Portugal and Uruguay cruise into the knockout phase? Or could South Korea and Ghana spring a surprise?
The bookmakers’ odds suggest that Portugal and Uruguay will qualify without any major problems, eliminating South Korea and Ghana in the process. Still, I want to take a closer look at Group H before locking in my pick.
Portugal World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group H: -138
It goes without saying that all eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo when Portugal kick off in Qatar. The legendary forward has scored a whopping 117 goals in 191 international games, cementing his status as the sport’s all-time leading scorer.
However, if the Portuguese are serious about going deep into the tournament, they will need their other superstars to rise to the occasion. The Manchester City trio of Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Dias will likely play a key role.
Portugal won the 2016 European Championship, but the nation is still waiting for its first World Cup triumph. Ronaldo and co. will surely be desperate to end their country’s World Cup drought this year.
Uruguay World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group H: +200
Uruguay’s roster is stacked with top-class players in every department. From veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to the experienced attacking duo of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, the South Americans look strong.
Meanwhile, Diego Alonso can call upon big-name stars such as Darwin Nunez (Liverpool), Federico Valverde (Real Madrid), Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid) and Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham Hotspur).
The Uruguayans have already played nine games in 2022, picking up seven wins. Having also kept seven clean sheets this year, they will be confident of progressing from Group H and proving their worth in the knockout phase.
South Korea World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group H: +900
The South Koreans have qualified for each of the past nine World Cups. However, they failed to reach the knockout phase on seven occasions between 1986 and 2018.
This year, Paulo Bento’s boys have played a colossal 16 games across multiple competitions. With only three defeats coming in 2022 – and 11 victories to boot – they will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds in Qatar.
Son Heung-min is undoubtedly the most important player for South Korea. The Premier League star has netted 35 goals in 104 games for his country and will likely add to his tally in the coming weeks.
Ghana World Cup Preview 2022
Odds to Win Group H: +1000
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Ghana has endured a year to forget. Indeed, the Black Stars were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations without winning a single game.
After scraping past Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup, Ghana suffered defeats to Japan, Qatar and Brazil. With that in mind, it is difficult to imagine Otto Addo’s side progressing from Group H.
At the end of the day, I expect Portugal to win Group H. Bettors looking for greater value may favor Uruguay’s odds, but I’m confident that Portugal will hit the ground running and qualify for the last 16 as group winners.
Best Bet: Portugal to Win Group H (-138)
