2022 Fortinet Australian PGA Championship Odds and Picks

The 2022 Fortinet Australian PGA Championship tees up this week for the second time at Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane Australia. One huge name in the sport is returning to try and join an exclusive club of three-time winners of this event – and he’s the lone favorite.

Cameron Smith comes in at +350 which is well out in front of the rest of a field that includes Adam Scott at+1000 and Cam Davis at +1200. Smith has won this event twice as he went back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. Amazingly, Smith is not alone.

Scott won the tournament in 2013 and 2019 while Greg Chalmers (+35000) took the title in both 2011 and 2014. However, none of these two-time Aussie Championship winners have won at Royal Queensland.

Last year’s winner, the first time at Royal Queensland since 2001, was Jediah Morgan who powered through the field for an eleven-stroke win by going 22-under for the week. That was the lowest score since Nick O’Hern also went -22 in 2006. Morgan comes in at +6000 heading into the opening round.

Here are the favorites to win the 2022 Australian PGA Championship:

Cameron Smith +350

Adam Scott +1000

Min Woo Lee +1100

Cam Davis +1200

Lucas Herbert +1400

Ryan Fox +1400

There is a huge time difference this week as Brisbane, Australia is several hours ahead of the United States so be aware of that when trying to watch or keep tabs on the tournament. As for the course, Royal Queensland Golf Club is a scenic course that is mostly flat, but has plenty of gently rolling elevation changes. Nothing dramatic but there are areas where players will navigate well-designed and manicured natural growth areas. Mid and short irons will be a huge part of this event.

2022 Australian PGA Championship Predictions

Cameron Smith +350

Cameron Smith comes in as the 100-lb gorilla this week. Smith is looking to not only grab his third Australian PGA Championship win, but he’s also seeking OWGR points. Since leaving the PGA TOUR for the LIV GOLF exhibition tour he’s lost out on any OWGR events and has dropped from the No. 1 spot in the world to 3rd. The Open Champion should be the player to beat this week as he’s one of the best scramblers in the game.

Ryan Fox +1400

Ryan Fox has moved to the 24th spot on the OWGR list with some strong play on the DP World Tour this season. He has 12 finishes of 19 or better, 11 finishes of 15th or better, 9 finishes of 9th or better, and 7 finishes of 2nd or better with 2 wins. That’s impressive. The New Zealand golfer carded a 54 at the PGA Championship following a rough weekend. Fox has a great short game for this course.

Marc Leishman +2500

Marc Leishman is also looking for a boost in OWGR points and could pull off the win this week. Leishman was T11 in the 54-hole LIV Invitational a few weeks ago and T10 at Stonehill a month back. He carded a T28 at his last PGA TOUR event which was the BMW Championship. Leishman could put his driving accuracy to good use this week as much of the out-of-bound areas on the course are just beautiful natural sand traps.

Others: Harrison Endycott (+6000) is from Sydney and plays these types of courses well. He carded a 10th-place finish at the Bermuda Championship while having a chance to go further up the leaderboard. Hayden Hopewell (+8000) is a young golfer worth watching. He hit the 23rd spot in the National Amateur rankings, won the 2020 Western Australian Open, and has now secured his PGA of Australia TOUR card.
