Most Passing Touchdowns in an NFL Season

The list of players with the most passing touchdowns in an NFL season is littered with iconic quarterbacks, from Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes to Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers.

NFL Bookies

Before you relive some of the best individual performances in NFL history, it is worth noting that our list features regular-season records only, meaning postseason and Super Bowl games are not taken into account.

Peyton Manning – Broncos (2013) – 55

Peyton Manning holds the record for most passing touchdowns in an NFL season, having chalked up a whopping 55 TDs in 2013. Thanks largely to Manning’s exploits, the Denver Broncos reached Super Bowl XLVIII. However, the five-time NFL MVP was unable to prevent a humiliating 43-8 thrashing at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks.

Tom Brady – Patriots (2007) – 50

With seven Super Bowl championships, five Super Bowl MVP awards and three NFL MVP awards to his name, Tom Brady is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time. Brady enjoyed countless memorable seasons during his glittering career, but the New England Patriots legend produced an unrivaled season in 2007, throwing 50 passing touchdowns.

Patrick Mahomes – Chiefs (2018) – 50

Only three players have registered 50+ passing touchdowns in an NFL season, and Patrick Mahomes is one of them. In 2018, Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs finished atop the American Football Conference, winning 12 of their 16 regular season games. However, Kansas City failed to reach the Super Bowl, despite Mahomes’ efforts.

Peyton Manning – Colts (2004) – 49

Manning features not once, but twice on the list of players with the most passing touchdowns in an NFL season. Almost a decade before he set the record, Manning threw 49 TDs for the Indianapolis Colts, enhancing his status as one of the best quarterbacks in history. Between 2000 and 2013, Manning led the league in passing touchdowns in four separate seasons.

NFL Odds

Dan Marino – Dolphins (1984) – 48

While the other players on this list achieved their best seasons after the turn of the millennium, Dan Marino posted his greatest season all the way back in 1984. The Miami Dolphins legend threw 48 passing touchdowns and picked up the MVP award for his efforts, although the Dolphins ultimately tasted defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.

Aaron Rodgers – Packers (2020) – 48

Like Marino, Aaron Rodgers racked up 48 passing touchdowns in a single NFL season. The iconic quarterback achieved the feat in 2020, while his Green Bay Packers won 13 of their 16 regular-season games. Rogers also led the league in passing touchdowns in 2016, two years after winning the second of his four MVP awards.

NFL Picks

Drew Brees – Saints (2011) – 46

Believe it or not, Drew Brees led the league in passing touchdowns in four of the five NFL seasons between 2008 and 2012. After notching 34 TDs in 2008 and 2009, Brees threw 46 in 2011 before throwing 43 in 2012. Of course, 2011 was Brees’ most productive season, but he should be praised for his remarkable longevity.
