Last Season

The Saints were dead last in passing offense (187.4 ypg) last season. Winston tore an ACL halfway through the season and missed the rest. The offense was awful, but the defense was solid. New Orleans was 5-2 before the injury then lost five straight. They finished with the four wins in the last five games.

The defense ended the season ranked No. 4 in scoring allowing opponents 19.7 points per game. They were actually tops in the NFC. The Saints did lose some key pieces to that defense. They will have to improve on both sides of the ball if they are going to get back to the postseason.

Saints Key Losses Heading Into 2022

Payton is the biggest loss. He led the resurrection of the Saints franchise and won a Super Bowl. New Orleans lost both safeties from its defense last season. Malcolm Jenkins retired and Marcus Williams is now in Baltimore. LB Kwon Alexander was not re-signed. WR/RB Ty Montgomery left to go to New England and backup quarterback Trevor Siemian is now in Chicago.

2022 New Orleans Saints Team Preview

The Saints signed safeties Marcus Maye and Tyrann Mathieu to replace Williams and Jenkins. Veteran QB Andy Dalton essentially changed places with Siemian and will serve as Winston’s backup. That is the key. Winston was enjoying his best season as a pro last year before the injury. A healthy Winston will rejuvenate the Saints offense.

Winston has plenty of targets including a healthy Michael Thomas. Chris Olave was the Saints first-round draft pick. Do-it-all RB Alvin Kamara is back and TE Adam Trautman is solid. If the defense continues to play well under Allen, the former defensive coordinator, the Saints have the makings of a playoff run.

The Saints have done well against Tampa Bay in division play. They beat the Bucs both times last season. Atlanta and Carolina could give the Saints four wins right there. The problem for New Orleans is that they face the NFC West and the AFC North. Those are two very strong divisions. The Browns and Cardinals are probably the two weakest teams in those divisions and the Saints go on the road to face both.

New Orleans poses a tough pick. The defense is solid, but injuries could kill the Saints like they did last year. Winston still has to prove himself as a quality NFL quarterback. The schedule is extremely tough. It’s a toss-up between 8-9 and 9-8. We’ll take the 8-9.
