Are you ready for the Phoenix Open? The rowdy fans were limited to the Waste Management Phoenix Open last year due to Covid but look for big crowds this time around. The week has already started with a live concert in the “Birds Nest” of the famed 16th hole. If you’ve never seen it, think college football-sized stadium with a golf hole instead of the gridiron!
Like last year, Jon Rahm comes in as the lone favorite at +750 but it was Brooks Koepka that took the event for the second time in his career. Koepka returns to defend his crown but he’s at +2800 which, in my opinion, makes him a bit more attractive! Last year Rahm slid a bit at the end to finish T13.
Hideki Matsuyama comes in at +1600 and is a two-time winner at the Phoenix Open. Also, one thing to keep in mind this week is that this event has ended in a playoff four of the last five times and seven times since 2008. Here are the favorites to win the tournament:
Jon Rahm +750
Justin Thomas +1200
Patrick Cantlay +1400
Viktor Hovland +1600
Hideki Matsuyama +1600

What do you get when you combine NASCAR at Talladega with Golf? You get the Waste Management Phoneix Open! Only 5000 fans a day were allowed last year and they still made a ton of noise so expect even more cheers and taunts from the stands this time around.
As for No. 16 aka the Birds Nest aka the Colosseum, the hole is famous for players like Tiger Woods and Jarod Lyle causing the crowd to erupt when sinking a hit a hole-in-one. On the flip side, Justin Leonard gave the crowd a one-fingered salute when they booed him for a bad shot. TPC Scottsdale is a pristine course with rolling hills, well-placed bunkers, tight landing areas protected by rough and natural areas. TPC Scottsdale plays like a classic course but makes full use of natural hazards… which include the fans on No. 16.
2022 Phoenix Open Predictions
Jon Rahm +750
Last year I faded on Rahm at the Phoenix Open but this year I’m feeling much better about his return to his college alma mater. But this year he’s coming in as the top golfer in the Official World Golf Rankings. Plus, he’s been impressive at Phoenix! In 2015 he entered as an amateur and finished T5. Since then he’s carded finishes of T16, T11, T10, T9, and T13 last year.
Xander Schauffele +2000
Xander Schauffele finished T18 at the Saudi Invitational last week and was scored in the top-20 in all four of his trips to the WM Phoenix Open. Schauffele was one of the leaders, co-leader entering the final day, last year but finished T2 along with Lee Kyoung-hoon. Schauffele seems to like this course and his short game will play well in front of the fans in the Bird’s Nest.
Webb Simpson +3500
Webb Simpson won this event in 2020 and was 2nd in 2017 after a playoff loss to Hideki Matsuyama. He’s played in the Phoenix Open four times and has never loaded up his clubs after Saturday as he’s finished top-20 in all four visits.
Others: Brooks Koepka (+2800) plays well here and won in 2015 and was the winner last year. I’m still iffy on his injury even though he seems to be doing well. Harris English (+6000) is a strong golfer and one of the few players in the game that has a poker face that may be immune to heckling after every shot.
