Alpine Skiing Women’s Slalom Odds and Picks for Winter Olympics

The women’s slalom event at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing will have a new champion. The 2018 gold medalist, Frida Hansdotter of Sweden, retired from the sport at the end of the 2019 competition season.

Betting on the Winter Olympics

Silver medalist Wendy Holdener (SUI) and bronze medal winner Katharina Gallhuber (AUS) both qualified for the event this year. Holdener is among the top 15 on the betting board. Gallhuber is not. Here is a look at the women’s slalom odds and picks for the Winter Olympics.

The Favorite

Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova is the overall betting favorite at -120 to win the slalom. She became the first Slovak skier to ever win a World Cup overall title doing so in 2021. Vlhova has two World Cup slalom titles (2020, 2022) and has five World Cup slalom victories thus far in 2022.

Vlhova has yet to win an Olympic medal, but has won a World Championship though it was in the Giant Slalom in 2019. Vlhova is a powerful skier with a string of wins and momentum heading into the Olympic Games.

The Contender

There are two competitors at the top of the betting board – Vlhova and American Mikaela Shiffrin. The gold medal winner in the slalom at the 2014 Sochi games, Shiffrin will provide the toughest competition for Vlhova.

Shiffrin is given +110 odds to pull the upset. Shiffrin has six World Cup season titles in the slalom. She also has two World Cup Slalom victories and two giant slalom wins in 2022. She won the slalom at Killington (USA) and at Schladming (AUS).

Longshots

The rest of the field is a group of longshots in this event. The only ones with a real shot at beating either Vlhova or Shiffrin are Holdener, the 2018 silver medalist, or Sara Hector, the favorite to win the giant slalom.

Holdener (+1400) has a second-place and a third-place finish in World Cup slalom races this season. Her best slalom season finish was second in 2018. She has won an Olympic gold medal, but that was in the team event in Pyeongchang in 2018.

Hector, who is listed at +5000, has three giant slalom World Cup wins this season, but none in the slalom. With the pressure off of her in the slalom event, she could use that to her advantage and shine.

Alpine Skiing Women’s Slalom Prediction

This is a two-person competition. Barring disaster – COVID, injury, or weather – this competition will come down to Vlhova and Shiffrin. With her experience in huge competitions like this one – and plus- money odds – Shiffrin is the pick over the best women’s slalom skier in the world right now, Vlhova.
