The 2021-22 NHL season is winding down and a number of teams are making their final playoff push. A handful of others made some moves at the trade deadline either to enhance their postseason chances or to begin the long rebuilding process.
Home underdogs continue to outperform (36.1% to 35.5%) road underdogs this season, though just barely. Road underdogs have a slight advantage against the puck line winning 59.6 percent of the time compared to 58.6.
How will the dogs do tonight? Here’s a look at the top NHL underdog picks for Thursday, March 24, 2022.
San Jose Sharks vs. Edmonton Oilers
Pick: SHARKS +210
Yes, the Sharks aren’t very good this season and they will miss the playoffs. But, if there is one thing they have been able to do well over the past season or two, it is beat Edmonton.
Believe it or not, San Jose has beaten Edmonton in nine of the last 12 meetings between the two teams. The teams have split two games this season with the home team losing each game. The Sharks won 6-3 in Edmonton in February.
Now, the Sharks are just 6-14 SU in their last 20 games and they are only 2-7 SU in their last nine road games. Nevertheless, we’ll play the Sharks who have won their last two games. The Oilers have dropped their last two in a row.
Chicago Blackhawks vs. Los Angeles Kings
Pick: BLACKHAWKS +170
Yes, the Kings are 6-3-1 in their last ten games and the Blackhawks are just 3-6-1. Chicago traded away its best goaltender and are clearly headed toward rebuilding.
The Hawks also played last night in Anaheim and fatigue will be a factor, but the Kings will put Carl Petersen in goal tonight. He gave up five goals to San Jose on March 12 and then gave up four more to Vegas on March 19.
The Blackhawks will use their 4-2 victory over the Ducks last night as momentum heading into tonight. Chicago gets the upset.
Detroit Red Wings vs. NY Islanders
Pick: RED WINGS +1.5 (-140)
The Red Wings are only 3-6-1 in their last ten games, but they did post a 6-3 victory over Philadelphia on Monday night. They have a Rookie of the Year candidate in Moritz Seider and a young lineup that continues to get better.
Like Detroit, the Islanders are out of the playoff race and they really aren’t good enough to deserve a – 210 price in this spot. When the Red Wings come off a win, the Over is 6-1-1 in the last eight games. Detroit will score enough to keep this one close.
Dallas Stars vs. Carolina Hurricanes
Pick: STARS +165
The Stars are making a huge push for the playoffs. They have won three of their last four games while Carolina has lost four of its last five. Dallas is also 10-5 SU in its last 15 games on the road.
Dallas is a veteran team that played for the Stanley Cup just two years ago. The Stars have won two of the last three over Carolina including the only game this season. Dallas won 4-1 at home way back in November. Dallas is the hotter team right now.
