The regular season has come to a close in college basketball to set the stage for Championship Week and the postseason conference tournament schedule.

This year’s ACC Tournament will be held at Greensboro Coliseum starting with first round action on Tuesday, March 9. The championship game is set for Saturday, March 13.

Top Seed Virginia Favored to Win ACC Title

The top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers have been opened at +250 odds to add a tournament title to their ACC 2021 regular season title. Virginia went 13-4 straight-up in conference play after losing three of its final five games. One of those losses came against the Florida State Seminoles in a stunning 19-point rout on the road.

The Cavaliers have to ability to keep most games close behind their stout defense but ugly losses to Duke and North Carolina State late in the season raises some question marks as the top seed in this tournament.

The Seminoles were second in the ACC standings at 11-4. However, they are listed as +225 favorites to win this tournament. Florida State lost two of its last three games, including Saturday’s 10-point road loss to Notre Dame as a seven-point favorite.

This could still be the most complete team in the ACC this season. The Seminoles went 15-5 SU overall behind an offense that averaged 79.6 points per game. They gave up an average of 70.1 points a game at the other end of the court.

2021 ACC Tournament Contenders

With the top two teams on board not playing their best basketball right now, this could open the door for the next wave of contenders. The Virginia Tech Hokies have been opened at +650 odds and the North Carolina Tar Heels are +750 fourth-favorites. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets round out the top five ACC teams at +800.

Of the three, I think Georgia Tech offers the best value at longer odds. The Hokies dropped two of their last four games. You can never count out the Tar Heels but they continue to struggle with consistency. After stunning Florida State by eight points at home as a 2.5-point underdog on Feb. 27, North Carolina lost to Syracuse on the road as a 2.5-point favorite.

The Yellow Jackets have caught mt eye as the hottest ACC team coming into this single- elimination tournament. They have won their last six games SU while covering the closing spread in their last seven games.

Key Georgia Tech wins include a victory at home against Florida State on Jan. 30 and a road win against Virginia Tech on Feb. 23. The main value in the +800 odds is a fairly clear path to Friday’s semifinals and a likely rematch against the Seminoles.

The Yellow Jackets were 11-6 SU in ACC play behind a scoring average of 75.6 PPG. They gave up an average of 70 points a game on defense.

What about the 9-9 Duke Blue Devils as the No. 10 seed in a 15-team conference? There has to be some value in Duke’s +1000 odds to go on a five-game run to the ACC Tournament title. The fact that Coach K’s team lost its last three games drains most of the value out of those inflated odds.
