The PGA Tour picks back up following the Men’s Olympic competition with a whole bunch of golf getting ready to tee up! On the PGA front, there’s the FedEx St Jude Invitational at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.
The invitational status means a reduced field of only 65 players and amazingly tight odds! There’s not much separation between the pack of leaders starting with Xander Schauffele fresh off his Gold medal performance in Tokyo. Schauffele comes in as a co-favorite at +1200 along with Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa.
The U.S. team also included Morikawa and Justin Thomas (+1600) as well as Patrick Reed at +3300. Reed filled an Olympic slot after Bryson DeChambeau had to drop out due to COVID-19. He’s the only U.S. Olympic player not listed as one of the top-six favorites for the St. Jude Invitational. Here are the favorites through +1600 to win the 2021 FedEx St Jude Invitational outright according to Intertops.
Brooks Koepka +1200
Collin Morikawa +1200
Xander Schauffele +1200
Justin Thomas +1600
Jordan Spieth +1600
Rory McIlroy +1600
The other golf going on this week is the Women’s Olympic competition as well as the Barracuda Championship in California which is a PGA Tour alternative event complete with Official World Golf Ranking points and a two-year PGA exemption on the line.
2021 FedEx St. Jude Invitational Preview
Where: Memphis, Tennessee
Course: TPC Southwind
Format: Stroke Play
Par: 70
Length: 7,244
When: August 5-8, 2021
Purse: $10.5 Million.
TV Coverage: CBS/Golf Channel
TPC Southwind is a shorter course this year due to a few modifications. What has not changed is the small greens which demand drives in the fairway and commanding approach shots. The Memphis course forces contending players to have good stats when it comes to Greens in Regulation.
The weather does not call for days of rain so traditional hot and muggy Memphis weather could be a factor in putting on the Championship Bermuda surface. The rough will be under 3 inches at 2.5 signaling a great chance for players to scramble.
TPC Southwind will be a challenge, as always, when it comes to hazards. The course has roughly 100 bunkers protecting landing zones and greens and water comes into play on over 50% of the holes. There are 7 dogleg left holes and 5 to the right as well as the iconic par-three number 11 hole which is surrounded by water and backed by bunkers.
Expect some shots into the water. Since 2004, water features on the course have collected over 5000 balls during PGA play.
2021 FedEx St. Jude Invitational Picks
Collin Morikawa +1200
Collin Morikawa played well at the Olympics until things went a bit south towards the end with the playoff situation. Still, he finished T4 just missing the Bronze medal. He also has his with at the Masters this year and his 2020 Tour Championship. If he’s over the headache of international travel then he should be a factor.
Daniel Berger +2200
Daniel Berger was in a four-way tie for second place last year at this event and seemed to carve up TPC Southwind with his irons. He’s won the St Jude Classic here twice. Berger can make good use of his scrambling abilities this week. He won earlier this year at Pebble Beach and is coming off of a T7 at the U.S. Open and a T8 at the Open Championship (British Open).
Webb Simpson +3300
Webb Simpson has been a bit inconsistent as of late but he’s played well at Southwind in the past. He was three strokes out of the lead for a solo-second finish in 2019 and a T12 last season. He was T19 at The Open Championship and he’s now ranked 16th on the OWGR list.
Louis Oosthuizen +1400
Oosthuizen was the leader after three rounds at The Open before a couple of bunker shots took him out of the running. You can bet he’ll have something to prove coming into the opening round on Thursday. Oosthuizen has finished his last six events in good fashion going T3, 2nd, T18, T2, T8, and 2nd respectfully. He’s only missed one cut this season.
Bubba Watson +3300
Bubba Watson has finished top twenty or better nine times this season and he is coming off of an impressive T6 at the Travelers. Watson is 7th in PGA “Off the Tee” stats this year and has been showing some of his old magic around the greens as of late and TPC Twin Cities is a great place to have a hot putter.
Others: Justin Thomas (+1600) is the defending winner of this event – he’s won it twice. He has a few issues during Olympic play that pushed him down to a T22 finish. Rory McIlroy (+1600) looked like an improved player at the Olympics as he seemed a bit more sure of his shots finishing T4. Only a few wayward shots took him out of the medals.
