On Saturday, February 1st, live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, two unbeaten light heavyweights will battle to become the true #1 contender in the division as David Benavidez takes on David Morrell Jr. in a highly anticipated boxing showdown.
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KO), the current WBC interim light-heavyweight champion, is knocking on the door of a fight for the division’s unified championship. Unfortunately, he will have to wait until Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol go to war one more time for the undisputed light heavyweight crown. Additionally, Benavidez will have to defeat the dangerous Morrell.
Like his opponent, Morrell Jr. (11-0, 9 KO) recently jumped up in weight and is already a legitimate prospect in this new division. Morrell’s blend of speed and power made him a contender in the super middleweight division.
He’s now looking to build off that success and work his way to the top of the light-heavyweight division. A win this weekend would get him in the conversation for a fight against the winner of Beterbiev and Bivol.
The Benavidez vs. Morrell Jr. bout will headline a Premiere Boxing Champions PPV event that will be live on Prime Video beginning at 8pm ET.

David Benavidez Recent Fights
The 28-year-old American moved up to the 175-pound weight class last summer and took on Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his divisional debut. Benavidez would end up winning via unanimous decision with the scores of 117-111, 116-112, 119-109. However, it was noted that he went into this fight with hand injuries.
Prior to the move up in weight, Benavidez was a multi-time champ in the super middleweight division. He put together some solid wins before leaving the division with victories over Demtrius Andrade and Caleb Plant in 2023.
In 2021-22, he TKO’d Ronald Ellis, Kyrone Davis and David Lemieux. None of these fighters put up much of a challenge for the rising star.
As for this weekend clash against Morrell, Benavidez made the following comments:
“I want to show everyone I’m the best in the world. I didn’t have to take this fight (Morrell). David Morrell. he doesn’t have a lot of fights, but he definitely has a good pedigree of boxing. Only one David will come out (victorious) and that David is David Benavidez. I’m definitely going to make David Morrell suffer in that ring.”
David Benavidez Odds
Benavidez opened as a -154 betting favorite in this bout against Morrell. Currently, his odds sit at a range of -175 to -230. These are Benavidez’s lowest odds since he fought Caleb Plant in the spring of 2023. At that time, Benavidez opened as a -182 favorited compared to Plant at +142 odds.
However, the odds for that bout jumped by fight night as Benavidez closed at -300 to -400 odds and Plant closed at +225 to +285 odds.
His odds against Andrade in late 2023, were also close as he closed at a range of -350 to -440. Priore to those two tough bouts, Benavidez had odds well into the -1500 to -3500 range.
David Morrell Jr. Recent Fights
Morrell last fought in August 2024, when he made his light heavyweight debut against Radivoje Kalajdzic. Morrell would go on to win the fight via unanimous decision with the scores of 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110.
Prior to that bout, Morrell stormed through the super middleweight division with seven knockouts in a row. He finished off Falcao and Agbeko, his two final fights in this weight class, prior to the conclusion of the 2nd round in each bout.
Morrell is annoyed with Benavidez’s so-called reign. In fact, he’s promising to knockout his opponent this weekend:
“I don’t know why people say he’s ‘the monster. Boom, he’s falling 100 percent. I promise I’ll knock him out.”
In another interview, Morrell would go on to list the following reasons as to why he will win the fight:
“I got everything – fast, power, defense, attack, legs that move. I got everything.”
David Morrell Jr. Odds
As far as we can go back, Morrell has never been listed as an underdog in his pro career. So, this weekend’s bout is the first time that the Cuban star has opened (+126) and closed as the underdog (+140 to +175).
Prior to that, his lowest odds came in August 2020, when he fought Lennox Allen. This was the third fight in his pro career and Morrell opened as a -455 favorite. He matched that opening line against Aidos Yerbossynuly in late 2022. Yet, he closed at higher odds than the Allen fight.
In his recent bout, Morrell opened at -2000 and closed at -2500 to -6000 odds against Radivoje Kalajdzic in his light heavyweight debut last summer.
Benavidez vs. Morrell Jr. Predictions
When watching footage of their recent fights, while breaking down each boxer’s strength and weaknesses, I can’t help but get fired up for this weekend’s clash. These are the type of fights that harken back to boxing’s glory days. A bout between two talented, undefeated athletes looking to become the best.
I would not be surprised if this bout becomes a candidate for Fight of The Year. That’s how much potential this clash has on Saturday night.
Morrell was a big fighter for the super middleweight division. His 78.5 inch reach advantage gives him four inches on Benavidez despite being roughly the same height. I fully expect Morrell to use his reach advantage via the jab as he puts his speed and athleticism on display.
Morrell is the more athletic and talented fighter in this matchup. His path to victory is to stay calm in the first half of the fight and dance around Benavidez’s pressure. Then, in the second half, Morrell can stick and move as he picks up points against an assumed tired fighter.
Benavidez’s path is pretty straight forward both literally and figuratively. He will apply the pressure, work the body, and display some underrated defensive skills. If he can get out to a lead on the scorecards, then Benavidez should hold on for the win.
I prefer some of the prop bets over picking a winner in this bout, as it’s a tough fight to choose which athlete gets his hands raised.
With that said, I feel that Benavidez has more “big fight” experience in his pro career than Morrell does. I think this experience is going to help him get the victory in a tight contest. Morrell is a live dog in this bout and there’s a possibility that this fight could be his coming out party. Place small wagers on whichever fighter you think will win.
Bet: David Benavidez (-200)
The Best Benavidez vs. Morrell Jr. Prop Bets
The following David Benavidez vs. David Morrell Jr. prop bets are courtesy of BetUS:
Over/Under 10.5 rounds
- Over 10.5 (-300)
- Under 10.5 (+225)
Combined, these two men have 33 knockouts in 40 professional fights. With that in mind, I believe these two undefeated fighters will go Over 10.5 rounds. Both men accomplished this mark in their light heavyweight debuts last summer.
Bet: Over 10.5 rounds (-300)
Will Fight go the distance?
- Yes (-250)
- No (+175)
Since neither man has tasted defeat in their pro career, I expect this bout to go the distance. That’s exactly what happened with each fighter when they made their light heavyweight debut last summer. Both men went the full 12 rounds.
I see this bout being a tale of two halves where Benavidez wins the first half and Morrell wins more rounds in the second half. However, that will lead to this bout going to the scorecards.
Bet: Yes (-250)
Method of Victory
- Morrell Jr. via TKO/KO/DQ (+650)
- Morrell Jr. via decision (+240)
- Benavidez via TKO/KO/DQ (+330)
- Benavidez via decision (+130)
- Draw (+1400)
As you can see from above, I believe this bout is going the distance. And, I picked Benavidez to win this fight. So, I’m taking the American to win via split decision (+130). I think he wins two of the three score cards and by a narrow margin. Something like 115-113 or 116-112 and that’s largely due to his pressure in the first half of the fight.
Bet: Benavidez via decision (+130)
Betting on Rounds
- Either Fighter wins in rounds 1-3 (+1800)
- Either Fighter wins in rounds 4-6 (+800)
- Either Fighter wins in rounds 7-9 (+600)
- Either Fighter wins in rounds 10-12 (+800)
- Fight Goes The Distance (-250)
Keeping in line with the other prop bets above, there’s no reason to risk a flier on any of the options on this bout ending inside the distance. Both men are highly capable of picking up a knockout in general, but I don’t see that being the case for this matchup. They’re too talented to lose via knockout.
Bet: Fight Goes The Distance (-250)
