Will Cooper Flagg Win the 2024-25 Wooden Award?
The John R. Wooden Award is given to the most outstanding player in college basketball, and Flagg is currently the heavy NCAAB favorite at -600 to claim the honor.
Flagg is in the midst of a terrific freshman season at Duke. The Maine native is averaging 19.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4 assists, and nearly 3 combined blocks and steals per game through his first 26 games at the college level. Flagg’s athleticism has been on display all season, and he’s doing it as the best player on a Blue Devils squad ranked No. 3 in the nation as of this writing.
Playing for a top-ranked team and a legit college basketball blueblood certainly won’t hurt Flagg’s chances of claiming the Wooden Award. If he accomplishes the feat as a true freshman, he’ll join a short list, however. The last freshman to win this award was fellow Dukie Zion Williamson back in 2018-19.
Future NBA Hall-of-Famers Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant are the only other 2 freshmen to ever win the Wooden Award on the men’s side, so Flagg will join some pretty impressive company if he does, indeed, emerge victorious.
To say that Flagg has lived up to the preseason hype would be an understatement. There is competition here with Ace Bailey, Hunter Dickinson, Kasparas Jaukučionis, and Ryan Nembhard also among those vying for the honor, but there’s a reason Flagg is such a heavy favorite at -600 NCAAB odds.
With only a couple of weeks left in the season, the Wooden Award is his to lose. Is the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship his to lose as well? Flagg is definitely our top NCAAB pick to win the award. As for cutting down the nets in April, that’s a debate for a different day.
Bet: Yes (-600)
Which Team Will Select Cooper Flagg in the 2025 NBA Draft?
Here are the latest odds for which NBA team will draft Flagg in 2025:
Team | Odds |
---|---|
Washington Wizards | +500 |
Utah Jazz | +500 |
New Orleans Pelicans | +500 |
Charlotte Hornets | +600 |
Brooklyn Nets | +600 |
Toronto Raptors | +800 |
Portland Trail Blazers | +1000 |
Chicago Bulls | +1000 |
San Antonio Spurs | +1500 |
Philadelphia 76ers | +3000 |
Sacramento Kings | +5500 |
Detroit Pistons | +6000 |
Washington Wizards (+500)
The NBA race for drafting Flagg has already heated up, as several teams have made no question of their desire to tank in an attempt to better position themselves to draft the Duke product. As of now, the Washington Wizards are in the driver’s seat. Washington owns the NBA’s worst record at just 9-45 coming out of the All-Star break.
The next-worst team is the New Orleans Pelicans at 13-42, so Washington already has a 3.5-game “lead” over the Pels in the race to finish with the league’s worst record. While Washington did add a couple of veterans in Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart before the trade deadline, I can’t imagine either player will have much of an impact on the Wizards’ ability to lose as many games as possible down the stretch.
Of course, finishing with the worst record doesn’t guarantee you’ll wind up with the No. 1 pick in the draft. In fact, the last team to earn the top pick after finishing with the worst record was the Phoenix Suns back in 2018. That was the year Phoenix opted to draft Deandre Ayton ahead of Luka Doncic! Whoopsie!
Just last year, the Atlanta Hawks won the lottery despite having the 10th-best odds to do so. Washington is an understandable favorite to ultimately wind up with Flagg at +500, but the odds reflect the uncertainty of the lottery system.
Utah Jazz (+500)
Utah has been accumulating assets for years, and, as mentioned, they’re struggling yet again in 2024-25. At this rate, they’re well on their way to potentially earning enough lottery balls to wind up with the top prospect in the ’25 draft class.
The Jazz already have a young core with Walker Kessler and Keyonte George, but adding a player of Flagg’s caliber could elevate them into playoff contention sooner than expected. None of Utah’s current players would qualify as franchise-altering talents, yet Flagg certainly fits that bill.
Utah has a slightly better record than Washington does, yet they have the same odds to land flag at +500 apiece. That’s because of how the lottery system is weighted. Finishing with the worst record doesn’t actually give you the best chance. In fact, the 3 worst records in the league will all enter the lottery with identical 14% odds of landing the top selection.
So, the Jazz, Pelicans, and others don’t have to worry much about whether they catch the Wizards.
New Orleans Pelicans (+500)
The New Orleans Pelicans are an interesting case. While they currently have some impressive young talent in Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy, injuries have plagued them. As a result, they’ll be lottery-bound despite entering the season with expectations. Brandon Ingram is now in Toronto, which is a sign that the Pels will gladly accept their fate and miss out on postseason play.
Williamson has been in and out (mostly out) of the lineup all year, while Dejounte Murray recently suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. New Orleans has some building blocks in place, and landing Flagg would go a long way toward accelerating their rebuilding effort. In fact, a team with a healthy Williamson, Flagg, and Murphy next season may be good enough to challenge for a Southwest Division crown.
As of now, the Pelicans are sporting the NBA’s 2nd-worst record at 13-42, with Utah lurking a half-game “ahead.” Because finishing with one of the worst 3 records is the key, don’t be surprised if the Pelicans shut some of their better players down fairly early in the second half of the season. In addition to the Jazz, the Charlotte Hornets are also just 1.5 games off the pace as of now.
Charlotte Hornets (+600)
Charlotte has struggled for years despite drafting LaMelo Ball as their franchise star. Adding Cooper Flagg would provide them with a defensive anchor and a secondary playmaker, forming a strong duo with Ball. If the Hornets fail to make progress in the standings, they could be in a position to land him.
As mentioned, Charlotte has a good chance to get one of those coveted 14% lottery slots. They’re only a game better than Utah record-wise and 1.5 clear of New Orleans. As we saw last year, this team certainly isn’t afraid of pulling the plug early in an attempt to do as much losing as possible down the stretch. Brandon Miller is already out for the season, while players like Ball, Miles Bridges, and Mark Williams may also have their workloads eased over the season’s final 2 months.
Based on current win percentages, the Hornets have the 16th-toughest remaining schedule in the league. The Pelicans and Jazz both have more difficult dockets, while the Wizards have the 2nd-easiest remaining strength of schedule. I think Washington has built enough of a cushion to where they’re likely to finish top 3 regardless, but the Hornets could fall off the pace if the Pels and Jazz face tougher paths the rest of the way.
San Antonio Spurs (+1500)
The San Antonio Spurs are a longshot, but the idea of pairing Victor Wembanyama and Cooper Flagg is something that NBA fans would love to see. The Spurs are 24-29 on the year, so they’re not nearly as dreadful as some of the frontrunners to land Flagg in the draft.
However, San Antonio was dealt a major blow right after the All-Star break when it was revealed that Wembanyama would miss the rest of the season with deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. That’s a scary malady, but, fortunately, the Spurs say he’s expected to make a full recovery. Wemby is the game’s best young player, and his presence will make San Antonio a contender for years to come. The team recently swung a trade to pair Wemby with De’Aaron Fox, and lucking into Flagg would instantly put them among next season’s title favorites.
Could the Spurs pull the plug on this season and tank in an effort to improve their odds? It’s certainly possible, and this team has had remarkable lottery luck over the years. Wembanyama, David Robinson, and Tim Duncan are 3 franchise legends who arrived in town as the top picks in their respective drafts.
While there’s a very slim chance that the Spurs can lose enough to wind up with 14% lottery odds, we just saw last year that having the best lottery odds doesn’t always lead to success. San Antonio makes for an interesting long-shot betting option at +1500.
Who Drafts Cooper Flagg?
This NBA pick is obviously complete guesswork, especially considering the team with the worst record won’t be alone with the best odds to win the lottery. I do think the Pelicans are likely to finish as one of the 3 teams with a 14% shot, however, and this is a franchise that has enjoyed lottery success over the years. Prior to landing Zion in 2019, the Pels also earned the No. 1 pick in 2012 when they grabbed Anthony Davis.
The Pels look like a solid wager here with NBA odds of +500.
Bet: New Orleans Pelicans (+500)
