On Saturday, March 1, one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best fighters Gervonta Davis will defend his WBA lightweight championship against Lamont Roach live from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

This bout was originally scheduled to take place in December 2024. However, it was believed to be canceled before getting pushed back to March 2025.

Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) last fought in June 2024, and crushed Frank Martin via knockout in the 8th round. It was his fourth consecutive KO victory and 28th overall in his undefeated pro career. That bout was also his only fight in the last 23 months.

Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) also competed last June and picked up an 8th round TKO as well. The victory marks Roach’s sixth win in a row. He will be coming up in weight for this weekend’s fight.

The Davis vs. Roach world title fight headlines a PBC PPV event with numerous bouts on the undercard. The prelims are set to begin at 6pm ET, with a main card start time of 8pm ET. The ring walk time for Davis and Roach is expected to be around 11pm ET.

Gervonta Davis Recent Fights

Since 2020, Gervonta “Tank” Davis has moved up and down between three different divisions: super featherweight, lightweight, and super lightweight. He’s held regular and full titles in all three weight classes.

In June 2021, Davis went up to super lightweight and defeated Mario Barrios via 11th round TKO. He was ahead on all three scorecards before the ref stopped the fight.

Following that victory, Davis would drop back down to lightweight and beat three inferior opponents in a row. In December 2021, he beat Isaac Cruz via unanimous decision.

That bout was originally booked between Davis and Rolando Romero, but the latter was pulled after criminal allegations were made against him. Isaac Cruz stepped in on two weeks’ notice. Surprisingly, Cruz became just the second opponent to go the full distance with Davis in the latter’s career.

In May 2022, Romero finally was able to face Davis and it ended via 7th round TKO. Surprisingly, Romero had put together a solid first five rounds before a 6th round knockdown turned the tide of the fight.

In January 2023, Davis fought Hector Garcia after the latter had to move up in weight for this bout. As expected, it ended via 8th round TKO after the corner called for the ref to stop the bout at the end of the round. This was also the bout where a big fight took place in the crowd.

In April 2023, Davis would beat the embattled Ryan Garcia via 7th round KO. Garcia was unbeaten at the time, but took heavy criticism as pundits and fans felt like the challenger quit the fight. He looked spry after getting up quickly once the ref finished his count.

In November 2023, Devin Haney relinquished the WBA lightweight super title to move up in weight. This prompted the organization to elevate Davis to the super champ.

His first defense of the WBA lightweight super title came in June 2024, when he beat Frank Martin via 8th round KO. Both competitors had been out of the ring for over a year.

Although Davis has unwavering confidence in beating Roach this weekend, he recently shared that being embarrassed in a fight is one of his biggest motivations every time he steps foot inside the ring:

“I just don’t want to look bad come fight night. My biggest fear is being embarrassed, especially in front of all these people, worldwide. Then you become this meme. I ain’t got time for that. I ain’t trying to go out and get my butt kicked. I don’t want to be embarrassed.”

Gervonta Davis Odds

Davis opened as a -1600 betting for the bout against Roach. He currently sits in a range of -1400 to -1800 odds.

For Davis, his odds versus Roach are pretty much in line with what we’ve seen over his career, especially in the last six to eight years. The lowest his odds have been since 2021, came in April 2023, when he beat Garcia. Davis was a -180 to -270 odds-on favorite.

Prior to that, Davis’s lowest odds came in 2021, when he beat Mario Barrios. Tank was a -425 to -600 favorite.

If you are wondering, the last time that Davis was an underdog game against Jose Pedraza in January 2017. Although he closed as a -160 favorite, Davis actually opened as +210 underdog.

Lamont Roach Recent Fights

Lamont Roach’s only blemish for his pro career came in November 2019, when he lost to Jamel Herring via unanimous decision for the WBO super featherweight championship.

Since then, Roach has won six bouts in a row. He followed up the Herring loss with two quick knockout victories. The first came in October 2020, when he beat Neil Tabanao via 3rd round KO. The second came against Daniel Rosas in July 2021, when he won via 2nd round KO.

After those KO wins, Roach went the distance in three consecutive bouts. He beat Rene Alvarado in December 2021, via unanimous decision after winning most of the rounds.

He then beat Angel Rodriguez in July 2022, via unanimous decision. However, this bout was more competitive as Roach won on the scores of 117-111, 116-112, 116-112.

In November 2023, Roach beat Hector Luis Garcia via split decision. It was a very tight contest and one that Roach came into as the underdog. The judges scored the bout 114-113, 113-114, 116-111. Garcia was knocked down in the 12th, which helped Roach seal the razor-thin victory.

In his most recent fight, Roach pummeled Feargal McCrory via 8th round TKO. He had already knocked down McCrory three times before the fight ended in the eighth.

In regards to his upcoming world title fight, Roach believes that he’s better than the previous opponents Davis has faced and he plans on showing it this weekend:

“The IQ and the skillset that I have, compared to everyone else that he’s fought, it’s just levels above. The tenacity that I’m gonna combine with it, is definitely something he’s not used to. I’m bringing the total package. I’ve worked to become one of the best fighters in the world, if not the best fighter in my weight class. And now I have the chance to prove myself against a pound-for-pound talent.”

Lamont Roach Odds

Roach opened as a +940 underdog and currently sits within a range of +750 to +920 odds. This is the second time in the last three bouts that Roach has been an underdog. He was also a +163 to +215 underdog versus Hector Luis Garcia in late 2023.

Prior to the Garcia fight, Roach’s last time as an underdog came in the lone loss of his pro career which took place in 2019. Roach opened as a +120 underdog and closed at a range of +275 to +345 versus Jamel Herring.

Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Predictions

Although these two men have familiarity with each other, stemming back from their amateur days, Roach is well-below Davis’s level of talent despite the challenger’s public proclamations.

Davis is a naturally heavier fighter, which should make a difference in this contest as he already has the advantages in power and strength. Adding size and weight advantages to this contest only makes things more dangerous for Roach.

Roach has solid boxing skills, but they’re not on the level of Davis. Additionally, he’s never competed against anyone the caliber of Davis in his professional career.

Wherever they were in comparison to each other during their amateur days, these two men are far apart in their current professional days.

With that said, I expect Davis to win this fight. Tank claims that he will retire at the end of the year, which means he probably has one bout left before his alleged retirement. We’ll speculate on that bout down below.

As for this weekend’s outcome, the only question is whether or not Roach can go the distance. Either way, he will pick up the second loss of his pro career.

Bet: Gervonta Davis (-1600)

The Best Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Prop Bets

The following Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach prop bets are courtesy of BetUS:

Over/Under 10.5 rounds

  • Over 8.5 (-115)
  • Under 8.5 (-115)

This Over/Under boxing bet is a hard one to predict. It even has some of the best handicappers split over which way to go. A number of fighters have come close to the Over when competing against Davis.

Hector Luis Garcia, Isaac Cruz, and Mario Barrios have all gone past the 8th round in their bouts against Davis. With that said, only four men have actually gone over 8.5 rounds versus Davis.

As much as I would like to see Roach survive the full 12 rounds, I have a hard time seeing him get past the 9th round. Take the Under and side with the trend of previous opponents getting stopped by Davis.

Bet: Under 8.5 rounds (-115)

Will Fight go the distance?

  • Yes (+335)
  • No (-500)

As you can see from above, I believe that Davis will end this fight inside the distance. Out of 30 opponents, only two of them have ever gone the distance with Davis. And, only four have gone past the 9th round.

Although Roach has gone the distance in 17 of his 27 pro fights, I don’t see the challenger accomplishing that feat in this weekend’s clash with Tank.

Bet: Fight ends inside the distance (-500)

Method of Victory

  • Roach via TKO/KO/DQ (+1400)
  • Roach via decision (+2800)
  • Davis via TKO/KO/DQ (-425)
  • Davis via decision (+375)
  • Draw (+2500)

Let’s recap what we’ve said above: Davis will win this fight, it will end inside the distance, and it will end Under 8.5 rounds. So, there’s only one outcome that will accomplish all of this – a Davis TKO/KO victory.

28 men have been stopped by Davis in his 30-fight pro career. That’s a staggering 93.8% knockout rate. It’s also why Davis is one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the sport today.

With that said, I expect Davis to pick up his 29th knockout victory in what should be a one-sided contest.

Bet: Davis via TKO/KO/DQ (-425)

Betting on Rounds

  • Either Winner in rounds 1-4 (+500)
  • Either Winner in rounds 5-8 (+160)
  • Either Winner in rounds 9-12 (+160)
  • Fight To Go The Distance (+335)

Since we’ve taken Under 8.5 rounds, we have two options here: rounds 1-4 or rounds 5-8. Additionally, you could also hedge your bet and go with the rounds 9-12 option. I’m going to keep the ball rolling with an earlier KO/TKO win for Davis.

I think Roach can keep at a distance and avoid dangerous exchanges over the first few rounds. Eventually, Davis will land some power punches, hurt Roach and then finish him off in rounds 5 to 8.

Bet: Either Winner in rounds 5-8 (+160)

What’s Next For the Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Winner?

One of the biggest complaints that critics and fans have with Davis is his selection of opponents. They want to see Tank take on the elite and not opponents that everyone believes he can beat. Davis’s former promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. was notorious for this as well.

Currently, there are a number of fighters calling out Tank. Newly crowned champ Keyshawn Davis is one of these men calling out the undefeated Tank. However, it appears this fight is just a pipe dream as Tank’s team has no desire for this matchup. And, rightfully so, as it has very little PPV appeal.

One fighter that Davis is interested in is Devin Haney, who Tank said he would definitely be open to fighting next:

“I would definitely be open to fighting Devin for sure, but he’s got to redeem himself. If he looks good in his next fight, or if the fight don’t go good, or even if he looks good against Ryan too and he don’t get the win, I feel it would still be a good fight to have. Even the buildup since we were younger and coming into the game. It was back and forth. I think it would still be a good fight between me and Devin.”

Remember, Garcia pummeled Haney in their first contest (April 2024) but the bout was overturned after Garcia failed a drug test in addition to being three pounds overweight. If both Haney and Garcia win their next fights, then a rematch is supposedly set for October in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A fight between Davis and Haney would be entertaining in terms of the boxing action, but nobody really believes Haney would win against Tank especially if he drops the rematch against Ryan Garcia. And, Davis already stopped Garcia in April 2023. So, there’s no need for that rematch.

Shakur Stevenson keeps calling out Davis, but Tank appears to be uninterested in this matchup. That’s highly disappointing considering this would be a great fight and arguably the toughest challenge in Davis’s pro career.
