NBA All-Star Skills Challenge

The Skills Challenge is back, for some reason. The rosters have been divided into 4 teams, with Team Cavs checking in as the early favorite at +200 odds:

  • Team Cavs (+200)
  • Team Spurs (+225)
  • Team Warriors (+300)
  • Team Rooks (+375)

Team Cavs features a couple of All-Stars in Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. Team Spurs features Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul. Team Rooks is Alex Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher, while Team Warriors includes hometown heroes Draymond Green and Moses Moody. Sorry, fans, no Steph Curry for you.

It’s easy to see why Team Cavs is favored, as both players are 2025 All-Stars. Team Spurs is interesting, though. Chris Paul is no stranger to this event, while Wembanyama is about as skilled as a 7’4″ man can be. Team Rooks is really up against it, while Team Warriors…meh.

Give me Team Spurs. I think CP3’s experience will suit him well in this one.

Bet: Team Spurs (+225)

NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest

Check out the Slam Dunk Contest odds below:

  • Mac McClung (-210)
  • Andre Jackson Jr. (+500)
  • Matas Buzelis (+700)
  • Stephon Castle (+800)

The Slam Dunk Contest was once the crown jewel of All-Star Weekend, but those days are in the past. Creativity seems to be in short supply these days, and most of the league’s best players no longer have interest in participating. We’re no longer getting the likes of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, or Dominique Wilkens in this thing. Heck, we’re not even getting Aaron Gordon-level players anymore.

This year’s 4-player field really puts the “Who!?” in “who’s who.” 2-time reigning champion Mac McClung – who is not really an NBA player – will defend his 2 titles. He checks in as a prohibitive -210 favorite to win a 3rd straight. McClung’s challengers are the Milwakee Bucks‘ Andre Jackson Jr. (+500), the Chicago Bulls‘ Matas Buzelis (+700), and the San Antonio Spurs’ Stephon Castle.

McClung is a great dunker, and he’s done a great job of putting on a good show over the past couple of years. He’s in the G League, of course, but the NBA is so desperate to fill slots in this thing that he keeps getting invited back. I think he’s a worthy favorite, but I see no need to wager on the -210 odds, which offer next to no upside.

Jackson and Buzelis are elite athletes, but I’m a bit surprised to see Castle listed as the player with the worst odds at +800. Not only is he arguably the frontrunner to win Rookie of the Year, but we’ve seen him punch down his fair share of impressive slams so far this season.

In an event like this, give me the long-shot value. Castle at +800 looks like a fun way to approach the Slam Dunk Contest.

Bet: Stephon Castle (+800)

NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest

The field for the 3-Point Contest is a bit more star-studded. Let’s take a gander at the 2025 field and odds:

  • Damian Lillard (+400)
  • Darius Garland (+450)
  • Norman Powell (+500)
  • Tyler Herro (+650)
  • Buddy Hield (+650)
  • Cameron Johnson (+750)
  • Jalen Brunson (+700)
  • Cade Cunningham (+1000)

Now we’re talking! Of the 8 players set to participate in the 3-Point Contest, 4 are All-Stars this season. Damian Lillard, Darius Garland, Cade Cunningham, Tyler Herro, Jalen Brunson all earned nominations. Norman Powell was arguably snubbed despite putting together an impressive season of his own, while Cameron Johnson and Buddy Hield are solid sharpshooters in their own right.

Of this group, Garland (43.5%) has been the best 3-point shooter so far this season, though Powell (42.9%) and Johnson (41.7%) aren’t far off the pace. The headliner is Damian Lillard at +400, though, and rightfully so. While Dame is more of a volume shooter than some of the others participating, he comes into this one as the back-to-back champion in the event. Lillard won it in 2023 as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, while he also took home the trophy last season in his first with the Bucks.

Experience matters in events like this one, and we know Lillard is as unflappable as they come. He won’t feel much pressure, and the +400 odds offer good potential ROI.

If you’re looking for more value, I like Buddy Hield at +650. The NBA journeyman has had a hard time sticking with teams over the years, but his shooting prowess speaks for itself. Buddy Buckets – now a member of the Golden State Warriors – is a career 39.8% shooter from 3-point range, though his 37% clip so far this season is actually one of the lowest of his career.+

Still, this contest is Dame’s to lose.

Bet: Damian Lillard (+400)

NBA All-Star Rising Stars Challenge

The Rising Stars Challenge has a new format this year. 4 teams of players will square off in a mini tournament. The crop of first- and second-year players have been split into 4 different teams, while there’s also a team of G Leaguers set to participate. Whichever team ultimately wins this competition will then advance to serve as one of the 4 teams in Sunday’s All-Star main event.

Let’s take a quick look at the rosters for each team:

  • Team Mitch (+135) – Toumani Camara, Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Scoot Henderson, Yves Missi, Amen Thompson, Ausar Thompson
  • Team Tim (+310) – Anthony Black, Tristan da Silva, Alex Sarr, Cason Wallace, Zaccharie Risacher, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Gradey Dick
  • Team Chris (+310) – Zach Edey, Stephon Castle, Ryan Dunn, Jaylen Wells, Dalton Knecht, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Keyonte George
  • Team Jeremy (+450) – Mac McClung, Leonard Miller, Dink Pate, Reed Sheppard, Bryce McGowens, JD Davison, Pat Spencer

Team Mitch – as selected by Warriors legend Mitch Richmond – is the early favorite, and with good reason. You can argue this team has the 2 best players in the entire competition in Amen Thompson and Scoot Henderson. It also has Amen’s twin brother, Ausar. Amen was arguably an All-Star this season, so having him on the roster alone is an inherent advantage.

You can bet Team Jeremy will be hungry, as this is the G League All-Star squad. They’ll be motivated to prove they belong in the NBA, but they’re going to have a difficult time against more established talent. Still, we know many players don’t take All-Star competitions seriously. If the G League team proves to be the exception to the rule, perhaps they have the juice to come out and win it. Reed Sheppard – the No. 3 pick in last year’s draft and Amen’s teammate with the Houston Rockets – is the headliner.

I don’t think Team Tim has the scoring punch needed to win it. Team Chris is downright mediocre. It’ll come down to Team Mitch and Team Jeremy, and I think Team Mitch is a worthy favorite.

Bet: Team Mitch (+135)
