One of the most anticipated events of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games – the women’s 3×3 basketball category – will present to fans a unique, quicker version of the classic game. 3-on-3 hoops has already found a massive following, and it should bring some excitement to Paris this summer.

3×3 was officially born as a new, intense, stripped-down, and high-energy format on the basketball court at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The game is played on a half-court with both teams attacking the same hoop. Games are shorter – lasting a maximum of 10 minutes – or until one of the teams reaches 21 points. The scoring system is simple: 2 points for baskets from beyond the arc and 1 point for baskets inside the traditional 3-point line. This format leads to a faster game pace with more dynamics because every new possession is crucial.

While 3×3 basketball can’t match its 5-on-5 counterpart in terms of worldwide appeal, it provides another wagering option for sports bettors. Odds have already been posted for this year’s action in the women’s 3×3, which begins on July 30th. I’ll break down the teams and the current betting odds and try to predict which group will be walking away with the gold in Paris.

Paris Olympics Women’s 3×3 Basketball Odds

The following Paris Olympics Women’s 3×3 basketball odds are courtesy of the top sports betting sites:

3×3 Basketball Odds3×3 Basketball Odds
United States (+160)Canada (+300)
France (+350)Australia (+400)
China (+650)Spain (+1400)
Germany (+2500)Azerbaijan (+4000)

United States (+160)

The USA women’s team is the favorite to win the gold, with the shortest odds at +160. The American squad is known for its depth and talent, boasting a lineup that combines experience with youthful energy.

The Americans took home the gold medal at the inaugural women’s 3×3 competition at Tokyo 2020. That team featured a quartet of WNBA stars in Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Allisha Gray, and Stefanie Dolson. Katie Lou Samuelson was originally slated to play that year, but she tested positive for Covid and was replaced by Young before the Games began.

None of the 4 players who won gold in Japan will return this summer, but the USA will run it back with 2 of the 4 players who took home the gold at last year’s FIBA 3×3 Women’s World Cup in Dearica Hamby and Rhyne Howard. Hamby was originally left off the squad in favor of WNBA rookie Cameron Brink, but Brink tore her ACL playing for the Los Angeles Sparks last month.

Hamby and Howard are the only current WNBA players on the roster. They’ll be joined by a longtime 3×3 veteran in Cierra Burdick. Hailey Van Lith – who recently transferred to TCU after starring at LSU and Louisville – will round things out. Van Lith won the MVP Award at the 2019 FIBA 3×3 Under-18 World Cup.

Team USA’s success in various international tournaments reflects their dominance in the sport. You can argue their +160 odds to win a second straight gold medal make them a bit undervalued by online oddsmakers.

Canada (+300)

Close behind the USA are the Canadians, who come in with +300 odds to take home the gold this summer.

Canada has been steadily improving in the 3×3 scene, and this will be their Olympic debut after they missed out on the 2020 Games. Canada crushed Hungary, 21-10, in a must-win game to earn qualification for Paris back in May. That was a must-win game after they fell, 19-18, in a semifinal to Spain earlier that same day.

Canada took home the silver medal at the 2022 FIBA World Cup, while they claimed gold at the FIBA AmeriCup that very same year. The Olympic roster is the same one that won qualification. Canada will feature twins Michelle and Katherine Plouffe, Paige Crozon, and Kacie Bosch.

The Plouffe twins are considered the best 3×3 women’s players on the planet, while Crozon ranks third on FIBA’s individual rankings. To say this will be a formidable opponent for the USA is an understatement, even though none of the 4 players play professionally in the WNBA.

France (+350)

As the host nation, France has the significant advantage of playing in front of a home crowd. That can provide a psychological boost and extra motivation, which they’ll need given their status as underdogs in this tournament.

The French team knows how to play together, leveraging their familiarity with local conditions and their tactical discipline. This team finished fourth at the 2020 Tokyo Games in 3×3 hoops. They were ranked No. 1 in the world as of April 2021. France won the gold medal at the 2022 FIBA World Cup. They’ve also claimed a pair of silvers (2012, 2023) and bronzes (2018, 2019) across 8 all-time appearances at the event.

Laetitita Guapo – one of the best women’s basketball players France has ever produced – will return for her second try at Olympic gold this summer. Joining her on the roster are Marie-Eve Paget, Myriam Djekoundade, and Hortense Limouzin. This is the exact same roster that won the aforementioned gold medal at the World Cup 2 years ago, while Guapo and Paget will return from the 2020 Olympic squad.

Australia (+400)

Australia’s odds of +400 indicate their solid presence in the women’s 3×3 basketball scene. This will be their Olympic debut after they failed to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

This is one of the better shooting teams in the competition, which makes the Australian team a dark horse in the tournament.

Team Australia – whose nickname is the Gangurrus – won the gold medal at the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup just a few months ago. They officially qualified for Olympic play after winning the FIBA 3×3 Universitality Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2 in Japan in May.

Australia will send Anneli Maley to the Games alongside Alex Wilson, Lauren Mansfield, and Marena Whittle. This team won the bronze at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, so a spot on the medal stand this summer is very much in play.

China (+650)

With +650 odds, China is seen as a strong contender but not among the top favorites. The Chinese team has shown flashes of brilliance in past tournaments, and they’re much more of a factor in the women’s game than they are on the men’s side.

Team China took home the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, so they know what it takes to compete for the hardware. They also won gold at the 2019 World Cup and silver back in 2022. China added another gold to its mantle with a triumph at the 2022 Asian and Oceanian Championships.

Wang Lili, Wan Jiyuan, and Zhang Zhiting will return from the 2020 squad to give it another go this summer. That experience could prove handy for Team China as they seek to win Olympic gold for the first time.

Spain (+1400)

Spain’s longer odds of +1400 reflect their potential as a wild card in the tournament. This is another team set to make its Olympic debut after they missed out on the festivities a few years ago. Spain was knocked off by Japan in the Qualifying TOurnament before the 2020 Games, but they managed to punch a ticket this year with impressive victories over Canada and Hungary in qualifying.

Sandra Ygueravide and Vega Gimeno – who have been 2 of the most prominent 3×3 players in Spain for years – will headline La Roja’s Olympic roster. They’ll be joined by Gracia Alonso and Juana Camilion.

Spain’s +1400 odds indicate a small 6.67% chance to win gold.

Germany (+2500)

Germany is a long shot at +2500, but their grit and determination make them a team that cannot be completely discounted. The Germans are led by 6’3″ Sonja Greinacher, who was formerly ranked as the No. 1 women’s 3×3 player on the planet.

She helped Germany win the silver at the 2021 Europe Cup, which remains their best showing at a major tournament in this sport. “Sunny G” also led Germany with 34 points in Olympic qualifying as they earned their first trip to the Olympics.

Greinacher’s size alone will make for a very difficult matchup for smaller frontcourts, and her presence makes Germany look like a very intriguing long-shot wager at +2500 odds. Marie Reichert, Svenja Brunckhorst, and Elisa Mevius round out the Germans’ roster.

Azerbaijan (+4000)

Azerbaijan is the longest of long shots in the competition with +4000 odds to win the gold medal.

They failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals at the 2014 and 2016 European Championships, but this is a different team. Azerbaijan have a WNBA player – Las Vegas’ Tiffany Hayes – which could give them an edge over some of the other underdogs in these Games.

Hayes led Azerbaijan to a victory at the Summer Olympics Qualification Tournament in Hong Kong earlier this year, yet oddsmakers seriously doubt their chances of repeating the feat in Paris.

Paris Olympics Women’s 3×3 Basketball Predictions: Who Wins Gold?

The women’s 3×3 basketball tournament in Paris should be a ton of fun. The USA stands out as the favorite. Given the wealth of talent on the roster, it would be quite an upset if the Americans fail to make the medal stand.

However, the potential for surprises is high, given the dynamic nature of 3×3 basketball. If you’re looking for more value with your Olympics bets, Canada at +300 offers a compelling case. You can argue Canada should be favored, and the fact that they are not presents an intriguing value wagering opportunity. France, with the home-court advantage and strong team cohesion, is also an intriguing option at +350.

For those willing to take a risk, Germany at +2500 look like the best long-shot value.

This should be one of the more fun competitions to watch in Paris over the summer. Keep an eye on these teams as they compete for gold in the thrilling 3×3 basketball format.
