In 2024, Scottie Scheffler successfully defended his title, finishing at -20 to claim back-to-back Players Championship victories. He staged a dramatic final-round comeback to ultimately outlast challenges from Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Brian Harman down the stretch.

Scheffler overcame a 5-shot deficit thanks to a final-round 64 to beat Schauffele, Clark, and Harman by a stroke. In the process, Scheffler became the first golfer in history to win The Players in consecutive years. With his next victory at The Players, Scheffler would join Jack Nicklaus as the only golfers in history with 3 titles at this event.

The Players Championship Favorites

The following golfers are considered the odds-on favorites, according to the latest The Players Championship odds:

Scottie Scheffler (+400)

The defending champion and current world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, enters as the favorite once again. His dominance at TPC Sawgrass and ability to thrive under pressure make him a stellar pick to go back-to-back-to-back.

Of course, doing so in any event is essentially unprecedented these days. While Scheffler’s history at the course should give you confidence in his chances to compete again this week, but let’s not forget he’s still working his way back from an injury. Scheffler inadvertently stabbed himself with a shard of glass on Christmas Day, an injury that ultimately required surgery.

Scheffler is on the mend, however, as evidenced by his strong 11th-place finish at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. He shot no worse than 72 in any round, so perhaps his season is starting to trend in the right direction. The world’s top-ranked player hasn’t finished better than 3rd in any of his 4 starts this season, but he’s going to get back to the top eventually.

The issue is whether Scheffler’s +400 odds to win outright offer enough upside. The +400 number is a testament to his utter dominance, but there’s probably more value in betting on the field given the volatile nature of golf in a small 4-round sample size.

Rory McIlroy (+1000)

A past champion at TPC Sawgrass, Rory McIlroy is always a top-tier contender. His ball-striking and experience in big events give him an edge in this elite field.

McIlroy claimed his one and only victory at The Players back in 2019. Rory finished at 16-under, 1 stroke in front of Jim Furyk. The Northern Ireland native is off to a solid start this season, and he’s looking for his second win of the young campaign. McIlroy has finished 17th or better in each of his first 3 starts, including a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am back in January.

Rory finished tied for 15th at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. He was firmly in the mix after back-to-back 70s to open, but a 73 and 72 in the final 2 rounds, respectively, proved costly.

Since winning The Players in 2019, however, McIlroy hasn’t finished better than 19th in any of his subsequent 4 outings at TPC Sawgrass. That includes a pair of missed cuts in 2021 and 2023, while he took 19th a season ago. McIlroy’s +1000 odds to win The Players this week offer quite a bit more upside than you’ll find in Scheffler’s +400 number.

Collin Morikawa (+1400)

With elite iron play and a steady short game, Collin Morikawa is poised to contend just about every week. If he can dial in his putting, he has the talent to capture his first Players Championship title.

The Los Angeles native has come close on a couple of occasions this season. Morikawa finished solo 2nd last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, while he also took 2nd at The Sentry back in the first event of the year. He also has a pair of 17th-place finishes at The Genesis Invitational and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, respectively.

Morikawa finished just 45th at The Players last year with a final score of 4-under. That matches Morikawa’s average score over his last 4 starts at TPC Sawgrass, while his average finish is around 33rd place. His best showing at this event was in 2023 when he took 13th place, while he missed the cut entirely back in 2022.

It’s likely a matter of when – not if – the 28-year-old will find success in this competition. Given Morikawa’s momentum after a stellar outing last week, who’s to say this isn’t his tournament to lose? Morikawa was the most accurate driver on the PGA Tour last season, and that kind of consistency off the tee will make him a weekly threat for the foreseeable future.

The Players Championship Best Betting Value

The following golfers offer decent betting value based on their current odds, 2025 season to date, and previous success at The Players Championship:

Justin Thomas (+2200)

A previous winner at TPC Sawgrass, Thomas has the course knowledge and shot-making ability to compete. At +2200, he offers solid value for a player of his caliber.

Thomas claimed the 2021 Players Championship title with a 1-stroke win over Lee Westwood. Like Morikawa, he’s been a consistent contender this season, yet his next win will be his first of the year. Thomas took a solo 2nd place finish at the AmEx in January, while he has 2 more top-10 finishes to his name at the WM Phoenix Open and Genesis Invitational.

He’s also made the cut in each of his 6 starts, and the +2200 odds we’re getting on an outright victory don’t necessarily reflect his steady play. Thomas did miss the cut at last year’s Players Championship, but he still boasts a solid average score of 4-under over his last 7 outings at TPC Sawgrass.

Ludvig Aberg (+1600)

Ludvig Aberg is a young star who continues to rise, and his aggressive playstyle could suit TPC Sawgrass well. If he finds his rhythm early, he’s a legitimate threat.

Aberg’s 22nd-place finish at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational was his first outing in about a month on the heels of his win at The Genesis Invitational. He also took 5th at The Sentry, and he finished a very respectable 8th place in his first-ever appearance at The Players in 2024.

While he’s only 25, there’s no disputing that Aberg is already entrenched as one of the world’s very best golfers. He’s risen to No. 5 in the World Golf Rankings, trailing only Scheffler, McIlroy, Schauffele, and Morikawa. That’s pretty heady company for a player with such little experience, and he’s rightfully considered one of the favorites this week at +1600 odds.

The Top Players Championship Longshot

As yet another past Players Champion, Adam Scott has the experience and skill set to make a deep run. His form has been inconsistent, but at +9000, he’s worth a look as a longshot bet.

The 44-year-old is certainly past his prime, but we’ve seen older golfers rise up and win at big events every now and again. The PGA Tour veteran hasn’t necessarily challenged for a win so far this season, but he’s at least made the cut in each of his first 4 Tour events.

Scott has an average score of -5 at his last 7 trips to TPC Sawgrass, but it’s been a while since he found much success here. The Aussie finished at 4-under last year, which was good for 45th. He finished 71st the year before that and missed the cut entirely in 2022.

The Players Championship Invitational Predictions

Scottie Scheffler is the safe Golf pick, but Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa are viable contenders week in and week out.

However, we’re going with Ludvig Aberg to break through and win The Players Championship 2025. He’s become one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour, and confidence shouldn’t be an issue for the young Swede after a solid outing last week.

Take the value with Aberg to win this week at +1600.

As the tournament favorite, Scheffler is a near-lock to contend on Sunday. He’s had no shortage of success at this course in recent years. While I’m not convinced he’s all that likely to win it for a 3rd year in a row, I do have faith that he can give the other players in the field a sweat come Sunday.

The -110 odds on Scheffler to crack the Top 5 aren’t great in terms of profit potential, but I like his chances of paying this one off.

Best Top 10 Finish

The youngster has proven he can compete at the highest level and offers value for a top 10 finish. Because I like Aberg’s chances to win the tournament, I’m obviously a fan of his +175 odds to crack the Top 10.

To Play in Final Pairing

If McIlroy finds his putting stroke, he’ll be in the mix late on Sunday. McIlroy has often had a tough time sealing the deal in recent years, but he still manages to consistently find himself in contention.

McIlroy’s experience and track record of success at TPC Sawgrass makes his +230 odds to play in the final pairing of the final round look awfully appealing.
