2024 UCI World Championships Time Trial Odds and Predictions

Last Updated on

Now that the Olympics and all three Grand Tours are out of the way, as the Vuelta a Espana finished up earlier this month, professional cycling turns its attention towards one of the biggest moments of the year – the 2024 UCI Road World Championships.

Live from Zurich, Switzerland, this prestigious cycling event runs from September 21 to 29. However, this preview will focus on just the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial that takes place on Sunday, September 22. We’ll have a Men’s Road Course preview prior to that race as well.

The Men’s Elite ITT spans across a 46.1 km course. There’s 413m of climbing on the day and then a flat 15km stretch to finish off the route.

Remco Evenepoel enters this event as the odds-on favorite, and rightfully so. We’ll get into his credentials below. He’s joined by other well-known time trialists in Joshua Tarling, Filippo Ganna, Stegan Kung and Primoz Roglic.

Let’s take a look at the latest Cycling odds for this event, examine the top betting options, and make our World Championships Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial predictions.

Men’s Elite ITT Favorites

The following cyclists are considered the odds-on favorites to win the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial:

Remco Evenepoel (-225)

Other than Tadej Pogacar, who won the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France this year, nobody has been more successful in 2024 than Remco Evenepoel.

His season really kicked off with a 2nd at Paris-Nice in March. A crash at the Tour of Basque Country derailed his spring plans, but Evenepoel returned at the Criterium du Dauphine to work on his form and prepare for the Tour de France.

The highlight of his Dauphine appearance was winning the Stage 4 ITT. Following a concerning effort for the Dauphine, Remco stunned his critics by finishing third at the 2024 Tour de France.

He won the White Jersey competition, for the best young rider, won the first ITT on Stage 7 and finished 3rd in the second ITT on Stage 21. Granted, he had already locked in his third-place spot and I don’t think he went full gas on this final ITT.

Following the TDF, Evenepoel crushed the field by winning Paris Olympic gold in the Men’s Individual Time Trial and the Men’s Road Race, making history in the process.

Now, he turns his attention towards winning the World’s Men’s Elite ITT for a second straight year. Additionally, Remco won the Worlds’ Men’s Elite Road Race in 2022 as well.

Joshua Tarling (+300)

The 20-year-old cyclist has quickly become one of the top time trialists in the sport today. Ironically, he’s also on the same team (Ineos Grenadiers) as Filippo Ganna, who’s also one of the favorites this weekend.

Tarling has had some highs and lows this season to date. He won an ITT in the O Gran Caino in February, was 5th in the ITT for Paris-Nice in March, was 6th at Dwars door Vlaanderen, took second in the ITT at the Criterium du Dauphine behind Remco, and won the Great Britian National ITT in June.

Unfortunately, he missed out on an Olympic medal in Paris after finishing 4th. He also crashed out of the Vuelta a Espana on Stage 9.

With that said, Tarling is a contender this weekend and could outduel Evenepoel if the latter is not in top form. The young Welsh rider finished third in last year’s ITT at the World Championships, just 0.48 seconds behind Evenepoel and 0.36 seconds behind his teammate Ganna.

Filippo Ganna (+650)

Filippo Ganna is a two-time World Champion in the Men’s Elite ITT. He won it in 2020 and 2021. He finished second to Evenepoel last year, narrowly missing out by 0.12 seconds. Ganna was also second to Remco at the Paris Olympic games, as the Italian rider took home the silver medal in the Men’s ITT.

Ganna’s season is dotted with success and he’s hoping to get the better of Evenepoel this weekend. The Italian cyclist has finished in the Top 3 for a half dozen different ITT stages on the season, including a few victories.

He’s a big, strong cyclist with power to sprint and to time trial. Ganna’s experience could give him the advantage over someone like Tarling. It’s going to be intriguing to see whether or not he can finish on the podium.

Stefan Kung (+1600)

Stefan Kung is a well-known time trialist just like Ganna. The 30-year-old has been around for quite some time and has plenty of World’s ITT experience. He finished 10th in last year’s ITT, which was down from his 2nd place result in 2022.

On the year, Kung has some strong results including an ITT win in the Vuelta, 5th at Paris-Roubaix, 3rd at Dwars door Vlaanderen, and a few Top 5 finishes in other ITT’s throughout the season. He was 8th in the Olympics ITT and 7th in the Olympics Road Race.

Kung is always capable of pulling of a very fast time trial. However, I think there are better options this weekend than the native Switzerland rider who will be super motivated to win in his home country.

Best Betting Value for the Men’s Elite ITT

Primoz Roglic (+1800) is coming off a history-making performance at the Vuelta a Espana with his fourth career victory. Roglic is one of the top Grand Tour riders in the sport. However, many people overlook his time trial skills which is a huge mistake. And, it’s one reason why I think he offers tremendous value this weekend.

Roglic has won 17 ITTs in his pro cycling career, but none bigger than winning the Olympic Gold medal for the ITT in 2021.

If we’re focusing on just this season, Roglic won the ITT in the Tour of Basque Country before his crash and injury. He was third in the ITT for the Criterium du Dauphine and third at the Stage 7 ITT in the Tour de France before crashing out. He was 8th in the first ITT for the Vuelta and finished 2nd in the final ITT of the Vuelta.

Heading into the World Championships, Roglic seems very calm and confident:

“I can’t make any predictions. The courses – both the time trial and the road race – suit me.”

At +1800 odds, it’s hard to find better value on the boards for a cyclist as accomplished as Roglic. If he comes in peak form, Roglic could definitely finish on the podium and challenge for the win.

Top Men’s Elite ITT Longshot

Brandon McNulty (+4000) is my choice for the best longshot to win the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial this weekend.

On the year, McNulty has won five ITTs already: UAE Tour, Paris-Nice, Tour de Romandie, USA Nationals, and the Vuelta. He also finished 5th at the Olympics ITT in Paris last month.

McNulty was 4th in the World Championships ITT last year, finishing 1.26 seconds behind Evenepoel. And, we can’t forget that he won the won the World’s ITT as a Junior in 2016.

The American is on the rise and developing into a fantastic all-around cyclist. However, his time trial skills are really becoming something to see. McNulty could surprise the field on Sunday.

2024 UCI Road World Championships Men’s Elite ITT Predictions

I told a friend of mine, a budding cycling enthusiast thanks to my ecouragement, that if Evenepoel races in this weekend’s ITT then he would win it. Well, the 24-year-old Belgian will take the starting line on Sunday, and I have no doubt that he will win.

Sure, I would love more excitement and intrigue but I also like seeing the sport’s best set the bar higher and higher. It helps to evolve the sport, create superstars, and makes these events even more notable.

Additionally, I would love to see one of my favorites in Roglic pull off the upset. I love his value for this race. And, I will also be rooting for fellow American Brandon McNulty to at least score a podium finish.

With that said, it’s all about Evenepoel and pulling off an incredible historic feat by winning both the Olympic and World Championships ITT in the same year.

Bet: Remco Evenepoel (-225)

2024 UCI Road World Championships Men’s Elite ITT Prop Bets

The following cycling prop bets are courtesy of Bet365:

Best Top 3 Finish: Primoz Roglic

  • Yes (+175)
  • No (-250)

Cyclists like Evenepoel, Ganna, and Tarling have a better chance of finishing in the Top 3 than Roglic does. However, their odds offer far less value. For example: Evenepoel is -600 and Tarling is -300.

That’s why I’m going with Roglic at +175 odds. I love getting plus-money odds on one of the sport’s top cyclists. Additionally, he’s a strong time trialist with plenty of accolades and experience. As long as he’s well rested after the Vuelta, Roglic could be a major player in the ITT on Sunday.

Bet: Yes (+175)

Best Top 10 Finish: Tobias Foss (+100)

I’m really surprised at Tobias Foss being list at +100 odds to finish in the Top 10 at the ITT on Sunday. Yes, he finished 11th last year in this ITT, but this is the 2022 ITT World Champ we’re talking about here.

Now, I’m not saying he’s going to compete for a podium spot but I do like even money on a former World Champ to at least snag a Top 10 finish. He’s had three Top 4 finishes in time trials this season, with the most recent coming four weeks ago in the Renewi Tour where he finished 4th.

Bet: Tobias Foss (+100)

Ben Healy (+100) vs. Jay Vine (-138)

In this cycling prop bet, you must choose which rider will finish higher. So, for this Men’s Elite ITT, you must choose which rider you think will have the faster time between the two.

Ben Healy comes in as the underdog, which I agree with. Now, Healy did finish two spots higher than Jay Vine did in the 2023 World Championships Men’s Elite ITT, but I like Vine’s form better at this point of the year than Healy’s form.

Healy does have a victory on the season, but it was a stage in the Tour of Slovenia. Vine’s season has been better, which is saying a lot considering he had to recover from a brutal crash a few months ago.

Vine won the Mountains Jersey in the Vuelta a Espana as he showed off some serious climbing skills. Yet, he’s also won two ITTs already this year: Vuelta a Burgos and Paris-Nice. He also had two runner up finishes in ITTs at the UAE Tour and Tour of Basque Country.

Let’s not forget that Vine also won the Australian National Championship ITT last year and has proven to be a strong all-around rider.

When comparing his 2024 season to Healy’s season, Vine has outshined him in ITTs and stage races overall. Vine’s odds aren’t terrible either considering his form over the last few months.

Bet: Jay Vine (-138)
